Question What type of protein drink do you use?

If you use protein drinks, do you buy them from the store or your doctor? What brand do you use?

I like Atkins Advantage protein shakes, which are available everywhere...drug stores, grocery stores, and the Vitamin Shoppe. The best prices, believe it or not, are at the Vitamin Shoppe, where a 4-pack of shakes costs $5. And they often send me coupons. I also like the Betty Lou's Low Glycemic protein shakes, which come in a 12-pack of pre-measured packets that get mixed with water or skim milk. They are more expensive, but I take them in my suitcase when I go on business trips, which I do quite often. I also have a large tub of vanilla flavored whey protein powder, which is available everywhere as well; and I use it to mix into my oatmeal in the mornings to ramp up the protein in my breakfast. Some days I switch it out and have 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and a snackpack of diced peaches (packed in water) for my breakfast, to which I also add 1/2 scoop of protein powder and a little cinnamon and stir it all up. Very yummy!

Diane: I use EAS soy protien and Super Advantage Whey protien, both in chocolate flavor. You can find both at Winn Dixie or Wal-Mart. I also use EAS pre-made drinks in the carton 4 pk for $5.00. These are small easy to drink and come in a variety of flavors. Also at Winn Dixie and Wal-Mart. The powders I mix with ice, milk and sometimes a banana or blueberries. Both give added flavor.

I make my own for breakfast with chocolate or vanilla flavored powder.

Then I have an unflavored powder that I mix with milk to thin soups so I can have my salty tastes and still be getting protein.

Then I drink Isopure as my beverage of choice all during the day. It has 40 g of protein and 0 carbs. Its a clear liquid kinda like a Gatorade. (IMHO< the grape is the best (ok ONLY one worth having!)

ugh -- I don't think that works. Just Google "Isopure Zero Carb Ready To Drink"
    Reason: add photo or link

I have not used protein drinks. My dietician recently prescribed Protifar which is a protein powder that has no flavor, you can mix it with anything sweet or salty. I mix it with yogurt, oatmeal or in soups and mashed potatoes.
I don't know if they sell it in the US.
Here's the link where you can learn about it:

I use the No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast, which I mix 1 packet with 1 cup of fat-free milk. I only have the Rich Chocolate flavor, and it is very good. ( not that filling though... )

Body Fortress brand is available at walmart or gnc. I do 2 scoops 56 gm of protein to 6 oz of skim milk. Strawberry is the best! I suggest trying anything before buying a ton of it! I bought a lot of isopure before surg and it was horrible!! It actually made me gag!! I know a lot of people love it but I hated it and wasted my money! So taste before you stock up! (just in case lol) good luck!!

Re: Isopure....its not all that yummy on its own, I give you that. But about a half a packet of those individual Kool-Aids or a splash of fruit juice makes a HUGE difference!!! If you're not fond of the taste. But I TOTALLY agree with Heather -- try ONE of each flavor before you buy more.
My FIRST go 'round I would have said "Never again!" But this time, realizing how HARD it is to get in the necessary protein, I vowed to work with it and found it only took a tiny alteration here or there to make it palatable. I'm almost through with my second case in a month and I'm not tired of it yet.

Patriots Girl: You can probably do a lot better protein wise, than the Carnation. Check it out.

The most common protein drink is the optifast but i asked my surgeon if i could drink the Celebrity Slim brand. He was happy with that. Celebrity Slim come in a variety pack of 10 different flavours, not so boring and they also dont leave that powdered milk taste after. I mix them with ice, give a good shake and its just like a milkshake. Had no problem having them pre op, lost 7kgs and continue to have one a day post op to keep up the protein requirement. My surgeon told me it was better to have a brand i could cope with and enjoy as i would tend to stick to the strict requirements better. He was right. Good luck.

Oh, OK. Thanks for your input, but I didn't think that Carnation Instant Breakfast was a good protein option. I used to drink that for breakfast way back when I was skinny and could actually control my hunger. LOL!

We can buy it from most of the bigger pharmacies, its not the cheapest but i figured if i can drink it easier and like it, it was worth the extra money.
