    Default Anyone with any regrets?

    Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of deciding which op to have done (band or sleeve - though I'm leaning towards the sleeve).

My question is, does anyone actually regret having the sleeve? Do they wish they'd have gone for the band or bypass or even hadn't of bothered?

I don't regret it. Having a foreign body inside you (band) has proven to cause problems for many people. The sleeve is permanent. Just like our weight problem.

I was considering the band at first. Then became squeamish about having a foreign body in me for the rest of my life. Most doctors now (I interviewed three before making my decision) are leaning towards the sleeve rather then the band. Too many problems with the band long term. No regrets so far. Hard to comprehend the weight coming off and not coming back, like when you go on a diet. This is definitely "NOT" an easy process though. Not meaning to scare you, it is certainly doable. Good luck with your decision. My one regret so far is that I didn't do it sooner.

My doc recommended the sleeve over the band because with the band you need frequent appts to keep it filled properly. There are also problems with it slipping. With the sleeve you hazel up and are good to go.

I also considered the lap band but changed my mind after reading up on the success rate. Much better chance of success with the VSG. I am too early out to say whether or not I have regrets. I do know for certain that I would have never lost over 45 lbs in three months without surgery. Good luck in your decision making process.

I'm one week out from getting my sleeve, so I can't say much to the tune of regrets, but I am a very analytical person, and with a mean long-term (5 years +) success rate of 35%, the band just wasn't for me. Granted, the sleeve is permanent, but I suppose the fact that you cant go back might be seen more as a feature than a fall back.

I had major depression hit in the wake of my surgery though (which is common for ALL types of WLS) and did a lot of searching for people with regrets in the long-term. Aside from complaints about specific physicians, I couldn't find a single one. And this is Internet- someone hates everything here.

I would definitely choose the sleeve over and over again. I have a couple relatives who have had the Roux En Y and also the band. They all throw up every time they eat. I have never thrown up since I had my surgery in July 2012.
Also the idea of having something in your body was kinda freaky to me. I had cancer 5 years ago and the port for my chemo grossed me out. i didn't want that again, so the sleeve it was.
In addition you are not restricted on what you can eat as far as choices. One of my relatives absolutely cannot eat chicken of any kind, or rice, or pasta, or etc., etc.
Go with the sleeve. You will be glad you did.

I can't speak to regrets yet as I am only two weeks out, but for me, my decision was between RnY and VSG... and in the end, I really couldn't come to terms with my intestines being rerouted and dealing with all the malabsorption and other issues from that. The sleeve was the only way for me. Lap band was never a consideration because of the idea of a foreign body and the poor results I had heard about. Besides those issues, my doctor's office (a bariatric center of excellence) doesn't even do the band anymore because they weren't satisfied with the results.

    Good luck on your decision!

My surgeon does not even offer the band d/t the fact that there are so many long term complications with erosion and regaining weight. My choose was between the bypass or sleeve. Because I had bowel issues before surgery it was recommended that I have the sleeve. So far I have no regrets. I did have a bumpy first month but over all I feel like it has been worth it! Good luck and talk it out with your surgeon to make the best decision for YOU!

I had the lap band in 2006. At that time the sleeve was not even discussed, it was either the band or bypass. My doctor wanted me to have the bypass but I did not want to go so drastic. I was very successful at losing 103 pounds in the first year that I was banded. I never had any issues of getting stuck until over a year later. Life circumstances and lack of commitment allowed me to gain all the weight back. I did feel as if something was wrong with my band after I began getting fills again on a regular basis. Turns out my band had slipped and I had it removed about 4 weeks ago. I do not regret having the band at all and I was amazed at how full I felt after small amounts of food. It was a great feeling. I have two friends who have had the bypass, one has kept the weight off and the other has not. As hard as it sounds it is easy to gain weight again, especially if you stray from your routine of eating and using food as a crutch, as I have for years. I am now scheduled to receive the sleeve which was highly recommended by my surgeon at this time. I am nervous but feel it will be another way to help me work on food issues and the emotional attachment I have to food.

I have a similar story to Lori...I had the Band in November 2007 (they only offered Bypass and Band then) and did great at first. Lost about 140 lbs over 2 yrs...but started having complications about mid way through year 2 (June 2010). Long story short my band was slipped and I had it removed in June this year. I am prepping for sleeve surgery hopefully soon. Don't have an exact date yet. Good luck in your decision but in my opinion Bypass and SLeeve seem to have WAY better results than Band.

Highest Wt. before LapBand(11/2006) -416 lbs.

My only regret is that I didn't have it in my 30s instead of 40s! I met my goal in less than a year, surpassed my dr's goal for me and I feel great! It's an amazing tool if you use it properly! It is MAJOR surgery and with all surgeries there are always risks involved. Please read, read, and read some more. Read everything you can about the before, the after, the stalls/plateaus, all of it. Go into this eyes wide opened and fully prepared. This isn't easy, but it was so worth it to me and my family.
