    Default Need some encouragement please

    Hi everyone,
I am feeling a bit bummed. I had surgery 9 weeks ago and have lost 13 lbs.

I know my surgeon told me I was most likely looking at a loss of 5 lbs per month because I was a band-to-sleeve revision and he said when it's your second WLS, then you tend not to lose as fast as the first time. Also he said of course the closer we get to goal the slower.

But this is ridiculous and I see folks on here who are in my weight range who seem to be losing steadily and faster.

I also keep reading of people saying they are full after just "a few bites" and that's not me at all. Don't get me wrong, I can't eat like b4 WLS, but can definitely eat more than a couple bites.

I am taking my synthroid as I should be and am just wondering if anyone has any tips/suggestions for me. They would be so greatly appreciated!

    What is synthroid?

If your carbs are low and protein is high you should lose no matter what. We still stall! Don't get me wrong, but we usually lose inches if we stay on low carb. I have been getting too many carbs lately and had a long stall but I got back to it this week and started losing again. What are you eating? If you had been losing before this surgery then your body may just be at a natural stall and the surgery can't really affect that. The ones at your weight. Group may not have been dieting. A lot before surgery, like we all do when we start the surgery process we have a hundred last suppers! Everything taste so good when you think it may be the last time you taste it. For a while anyway. This will cause a faster loss after surgery. I had to go thru the pre op diet twice bc of rescheduling, I think this caused me to hit a plateau earlier than most.
Don't worry, you may have to wait it out but it has to come off if you are watching the carbs. I wish we could get a reading on what our bodies are doing while stalled, something as emotionally satisfying as seeing the scale move.
If you think it may be your diet then post what you are eating and maybe we can help.

Gunka, I know exactly how you feel!! I was so bummed at my stall and my ability to eat that I thought something was wrong with my sleeve and was willing to do another horrible swallow test just to find out! But my doctor reassured me today, and he told me several times that stalls are normal and we all lose at different rates. He also told me to weigh no more than twice a month. Which is going to be super hard for me because I've been weighing many many times every day. I remember hearing somewhere that gastric sleevers have about the same weight loss as bypass-ers at the end of two years. We're all going to just need to hang in there, get the protein in, cut the carbs, and get our bodies moving! (Something else I haven't done...)

Forget about the scale (I know, easier said than done) and just remember PROTEIN AND PRODUCE, WATER and EXERCISE. Measure your progress by how your clothes fit. Keep picturing yourself as slim ad trim, fit and firm...positive thoughts equal positive results. If you keep picturing yourself fat and depressed, that is what you are going to be. Read THE SECRET.

13 pounds in 9 weeks is over 1 lb per week and a good steady weight loss. I know how it feels to lose this slowly though. I have been on high protein drinks and low low carbs and fat since March (21 weeks) and lost 34 lbs. At my weight I thot I would just drop it off. Not happening. It can be discouraging at times and hearing how so many have so many stalls and slow downs it frightens me that I will have to go to the RnY later anyway. But hey, I wanted to encourage you and myself to realize that it really is true that if you lose it slowly but surely you are more apt to keep it off.

I have about the same amount of weight to lose to my goal as you do. Ask your self - what is full-my new full is a satisfied feeling not the over stuffed feeling of my pre-surgery days. Eat are you overeating? Have you kicked up your exercise? - It is easy to fool ourselves(like we did in the past). I was stalled for about 4-5 weeks with no change. - I finally kicked up the exercise and guess what - I am down 2.5lbs this week. Take a extra long walk, do some heavy housekeeping, anything to burn some extra - you will see the pounds will come off.

Its been one month today since my surgery and I have lost only 12 pounds. I lost 10 the 2 weeks prior to my surgery. I actually gained a pound this week. I hadnt lost anything in almost 2 weeks. I got so frustrated I baked a batch of cookies at work (Im a nanny) and ate way too much cookie dough and cookies. That is where the one pound gain came in Im sure. I can eat anything at this point....not alot of it but I can eat anything. Im feeling like this isnt going to work. I was hoping sweets wouldnt agree with me anymore and that it would be harder to eat but it isnt. I have to get back on track and stop weighing myself. That is what makes me want to eat....I am so mad at myself for the whole cookie thing.

I would think that your weight loss is about right. You lost some with your first procedure and now with this second, you should probably lose slower. I have found that I too can eat more than a few bites but my problem is I eat too fast. I don't feel full so I take another and another. Then when it finally all goes down, I feel too full. That's going to take me a while to get used to.

I think we all go through this. It makes you think about whether you are really following directions or not. Every time I dont lose weight for a day (!!), I rethink and look at all my instructions again to make sure I am doing everything right. I have found something wrong each time. Not enough water, not enough protein/too many carbs, etc. I fix the "problem" and it moves again! Until it stops another day This week I realized I have not been taking the no drinking before/after/during eating rule as seriously as I should. So I tried really hard for one day (yesterday), watching the clock and making sure to wait long enough... And guess what? It dropped almost half a pound this morning! I also learned from my experiment yesterday why that was so important... Basically our stomachs are too small to hold more than a few ounces *at one time*. But eventually that food moves into your small intestines, where all the nutrients (and FAT) is absorbed into your body. They didnt change our small intestine... when you drink, you push the food out of your stomach into your small intestines... freeing up room for MORE FOOD! So you get hungry sooner and eat more! When I didnt drink before/during and ate really slow, I definitely ate less than any other day for 2 weeks before that! (I track calories in livestrong - i was getting between 1000-1200 calories a day, a lot for us! the day I ate slow and didnt drink I barely made 850 and I still didnt get enough water in... that will be next again). The longer your food stays in your stomach the longer you feel too full to eat more! Your small intestines have LOTS of room in there, so you could eat - flush it down with water, eat again - flush it down with water, etc until you have eaten as much as you used to! And all that sits in your small intestines being absorbed just the same as if you ate it all at once like you used to! Every week for me has been a humbling learning experience... mostly learned that I suck at following directions So before you give up on this, make sure you are not sabotaging yourself! Get out the instructions again! INcluding the walking/exercise part. Find out how much protein exactly you should be aiming for every day, how much water you should be getting, how long to wait before/after eating to drink, make sure you are eating SLOWLY and chewing every bite like 30 times. Put the fork DOWN between bites. Put a timer on yourself - after 20 minutes, STOP EATING and start the timer for when you can drink. Do it for a few days and see if it makes a difference! Then keep practicing it until you can do it without the timer so much. My friend has the DS surgery and he gets his phone out and sets the timer for 4 minutes between BITES. Yes, its annoying But I have to hand it to him for diligence! And it has definitely worked for him - over 100 pnds in 4 months (but with DS surgery not VSG.. not going to be so good for us but it WILL work).

My favorite saying for dieting EVER? If you trip over the top step, dont throw yourself down the rest of the stairs... Meaning, dont give up because you hit a little bump! Get excited about this again, read EVERYTHING you have about what you should and shouldnt do again. Tell yourself it IS going to work, its just a matter of figuring it out like a puzzle... Assume if it is not working, you are not doing everything you should be... Even though I know stalls will happen even if I do everything right, I am not going to throw in the towel when they do... Every day the scale doesnt move (or every week if you are that disciplined ) I force myself to think about what I did or didnt do the day before and what I will do today to change it. It doesnt always work, but it keeps me on my toes and trying! and eventually, it does work (whether its because of my changes or just the normal end of a stall doesnt matter - I assume it was my doing I deserve a little credit, even if it is not really mine!).

Good luck!!! Dont give up on yourself!

Judie....excellent! I have cut and pasted your post and will keep it handy for me to read after my surgery!!!!! Why? Because I SUCK at following directions, too! If I didn't, I wouldn't be overweight! I can educate my patients on how to eat, but I don't follow my own instruction...so, now I will follow yours. THANKS!!!!

thank you all SO much for listening and giving advice! Am thinking that maybe I'm not getting in enough protein and definitely not enough water. I do also admit that I sometimes don't wait 30 mins to drink after a meal.

Starting tomorrow or Monday, I'm going to diligently track my protein, calories and fluid intake and then see what happens. I will let you all know.

Oh and I also admit that I haven't been doing all the walking that I normally have been able to do. The temp in Houston has been over 100 all month and it's just plain miserable for me to get out and do it. I used to have a treadmill but got rid of it a few years ago as it was just a place to hang clothes. Now I wish I'd kept it!

thank you SO much for the kindness you've shown in responding! And Judie, you've been kind enough to talk to me several times with advice via PM and your post and suggestions were very helpful!

    thanks!

Janese, don't beat yourself up over it. just pick yourself up and dust yourself off and get back on the horse so to speak, we are all fighting the same battle. we all need to learn different ways to get this darn weight off and not give up. Keep up the work honey! I haven't weight myself in a few days! I am at 3 wks so I figured its better not to. I am eating better this week so I am sure that i didn't loose. good luck

Gunka, I can sympathize. I live northwest of Fort Worth. Even if I were to try and walk at 9:30 or 10 (which makes me uncomfortable) it's STILL too hot to get outside. There are no malls or anywhere indoors where I could walk within an hour's drive, and I'm just not willing to try Walmart...lol. I have an elliptical, and I guess it's time I get that puppy out and get moving! Next Wednesday will be four weeks for me, and I think that's when I'm going to give it a whirl.
