    Smile Protein

Hi All, Can anyone give some guidance on protein supplements post op. I am trying out some products from CMI medical. They are protein liquids made for dialysis patients. 2 tablespoons equates to 15g protein with 76 calories. No sugar. I have some others on the way as well. I plan to add them to my water as they are orange and grape flavored.

Can anyone also guide on the prediet shakes with low carbs? I have to do 2 week liquid diet prior to surgery.

    thanks all.

I am xcited you are going to Dr. ALmamza---I think he is wonderful.

Just because you find a protein powder you like before surgery does not mean it will taste good after! Do not stock up on any one kind. If anything, buy *one* container of the kind you like best now (dont spend a fortune on it!)... But even better is to start collecting sample packs. You can usually order individual serving packets of most different kinds, and a lot of companies will mail you a cheap or free sample. Collect all those you can so that after surgery if you get tired of the one you bought or it doesnt taste good anymore, you have some backups to try and see what does work.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, they don't ship to Canada. I could cross the border and pick it up but they won't accept a Canadian credit card. Frustrating because it sounds like something very helpful.

My nutritionist recommended something that gives you at least 15 g protein per serving and less than 6 g sugar. The bests are the ones that have a protein source/main ingredient such as: milk, soy, egg, whey protein isolate or soy protein isolate. Avoid supplements which list collagen, collagenic protein isolate, or hydrolyzed collagen as the protein source.

Some brands: Designer Protein, Isopure, Myoplex, Unjury, Revival Soy -- if you are near a Vitamin Shoppe or GNC or health food store, you might be able to find individual packets of each to try before investing in a bug tub so you can see which you like the best. I, for one, don't like the taste of Designer Protein and feel I've wasted money on a tub I have just sitting there.

She never mentioned carbs, and now after reading so many people here I'm a lot more aware of the carbs I'm eating. I got Muscle Milk and Muscle Milk Light, and they taste great IMO, but now I am a little concerned about the carbs especially on the regular formula. I'm not going to beat myself up over a few extra carbs -- I figure I'm eating far, far fewer carbs than I was before the surgery, and I'm in no race to lose weight (and losing too fast has it's own issues). Plus, they make a Cake Batter flavor -- yum! I can mix that with other flavor protein powders in a shake, or add it to like cinnamon oatmeal which make it taste like a sticky bun.

Hi Connie, It doesn't taste bad at all. Like St. Joseph's baby asprin. I mixed 2tbs with 8 oz of water. CWI medical is where I got it. they have many products and different flavors. I have to tell you, I am getting nervous. especially of late as i see lots of folks posting of a rough time first few days. I am a bit concerned for the flight home to New Orleans...long drive (or sit in van) and long flight.

Special K makes Protein Water mix -- it's got 5 g of whey isolate, which for a regular non-thick drink is pretty good. Pink lemonade and some other flavor that's not my thing.

If you don't mind ordering online there is Unjury.com and the Chocolate Splendor is great. Another good one if you can't wait for something to come in..at Hi Health and maybe GNC there is ISO-100. There are several flavors and the taste is good. They are 106 calories and 25 g of protein.

I will definitely check out those Sunkist ones! I just checked my bottle of Pro-Stat from CWI. It is a medical protein that can be used in IVs, etc... Another poster on this thread mentioned to stay away from "collagen" based proteins, and I when I checked, this is collagen based, so it may not be a good source. I will need to research that a bit further.

I'm not sure why not the collagen based products, but we need to look into it, as here was the advice in the post.

"My nutritionist recommended something that gives you at least 15 g protein per serving and less than 6 g sugar.
