    Default how many calories?

    Hi everyone,
I'm two weeks out of surgery today. I'm wondering how many calories you were able to eat at this point and what is optimal for best weight loss. I get between 400 and 600 calories per day. Not really seeing the scale move much either. Any advice?

It's different for everyone. What food stage are you on? I was on clears with 3 oz of protein shake 3x a day until 2 weeks. Now I'm on pureed/soft. I eat maybe 650-700 calories a day. I eat mostly protein and focus on getting enough of that in. For me, it's more about eating enough protein and drinking enough liquids. I am not as concerned about calories although I do log everything I eat.

I am not supposed to track my calories until 12 months out. I concentrate on protein and sugar that's it. Honestly its been nice not having to track my calories constantly. It was a huge change at first because I was soooo used to tracking.

I physically wasn't able to get more than 500 until after 4 weeks out, then I was able to get 6-800

Do people actually track calories? With as little as we are eating...why?

Well, I mostly track to make sure that I get enough protein. I probably would not get enough unless I tracked it. The app I use for this gives me the calorie count as well, which I do find pretty useful.

I find that if I don't watch my intake, I don't end up eating enough and I don't end up getting enough of what I need (ie protein).

Some people may also find that certain calorie amounts make them lose better. Sometimes if they get too low or too high, they will stall or not feel good physically. Logging what you need can help you pinpoint what's going on if you find that you need to examine your eating habits.

I know I need 60-80 g of protein, that is the only number I try to hit daily (that and 64 oz of water) that's it...I don't track anything else, seems like people are making this more difficult than it needs to be...JMHO

I know without a calorie count, I won't eat enough and then won't lose weight. I ate ~400 calories for a couple days and screwed me up. I know for me, I have to track it in order to stay on track. I'm glad you don't have to.

I will be tracking my protein as well. However I also know that it's really easy to drink 1200 calories and not blink an eye so for some I'm sure counting calories keeps them in check. I'm not there yet so I won't know for sure but I cant imagine being able to eat 3600 calories in a day....can you???

Much like the lapband and bypass, it'd be really easy for someone to stray and eat things they shouldn't. For me personally, I will need to track everything I eat. While only on liquids/pureed, you can still make poor choices and end up gaining weight from it. It wouldn't be hard for someone to mush up something they shouldn't have (or even just run through McDonalds and get a chocolate shake) and sip sip sip it all day. Before you know it, you're back to eating 2000+ cals a day and getting stuck.

I'll be counting personally because it will keep me accountable and I'll be able to show my dietitian exactly what I'm consuming in case I encounter any stalls or hurdles I cannot overcome. She may want to tweak my intake a bit or change things up. That's just my personal reasoning!

If it makes you two feel better, I actually can't drink my calories. I know I am not alone. Any liquid that has a lot of sugar in it or anything like that, I get horrible, horrible belly aches. Can't drink Gatorade either. Water, crystal lite, tea, and coffee with a little sugar is all I can handle.

I know everyone is different. I worried a lot about drinking calories prior to surgery but now, I can't do it and it's a relief!

For me, I feel like I'll get best results from tracking protein, water, exercise, and probably calories too. What apps do you all find to be most helpful with your tracking? I would like to go ahead and get an app to be familiar with it before my surgery.

Most people here use MyFitnessPal. However, I use LoseIt. Both are free and you can use them on your smartphone if you have one. That was important for me.

Thank you for the responses. I like to keep track of what I eat especially for the protein. i am not hitting that magic 60 grams yet. Protein powders have been making me sick so I am trying to get the protein in. i imagine that is more the issue than the actual calories.
