    Default Hiccups?

I have noticed that I am more prone to having hiccups after my gastric sleeve surgery. Is this normal? I've tried reading post operative experiences, but I haven't come across anything that would confirm that it is normal. Should I be concerned? It really hurts when I get them.

I think it comes with VSG. I think all that acid in your stomach has nowhere to go but up. Am not sure though. I have never really come across hiccups with any of my readings.

I usually have hiccups now and usually it happens after eating or when I eat too fast. I noticed that it only hurts when you get it after eating. Hiccups you get on any other occasion don't.

Hmm...that kind of worries me because I get hiccups a lot now and I haven't had the surgery yet! I hate the hiccups with a passion they always make my chest hurt!

Yes, that is something to think about. I get hiccups a lot too now and I have not even had the surgery. I'm going to go and look some more to see why you would get more hiccups after this surgery.

I had the operation last week, but so far, no hiccups yet, at least not harmful ones.

    Hi!!!

I think that hiccups come from eating too fast. The thing is, when I had my VSG, I tended to think "normally" which means that I tend to order the same amount of food I ordered when I was big, and eat in the same way. I would find that I'd feel full after a few bites and that's when the hiccups start. I suggest that you slow down your eating. This is what I did. I stopped preparing food for myself, and when dining out, my wife would order for me, or we'd share her food.

In effect, you can think of the hiccups as a way of your body signalling to you that you are too full, or eating too fast... and that you should slow down! Then you have to get used to thinking about small portions.

I still get hiccups now and then, but it's not as painful as I had them early on.

You mean that even after your surgery, you still think about food like you've never had the surgery itself? If that is the case, I think I'd be ordering 2 Big Macs every time I'm at McDonalds!

Well it does take a little getting used to, but you will eventually learn to reduce your serving sizes by default. You should use measuring cups and spoons when you are just starting out, so that you would not overeat or eat too fast.

I also get hiccups if I eat too quickly. I reckon this is because I've always liked my food hot. Anybody invented a bain-marie type dinner plate yet?

I don't get hiccups, but I do find that I need to burp after nearly every big meal (big is relative...it now means about 3 or 4 oz of meat or fish, plus about 2 oz of salad or veggie). I never used to burp before; I think it's just the food squeezing the air out of my sleeve to make room for it. Displacement theory, haha.

I burp when I'm full or eat something my stomach doesn't like. I hiccup when I force too much food down too fast. It gets stuck then a hiccup!
