I would do this all over again in a New York second!! I have "lost" at least 300lbs in my lifetime only to re-gain it back several times, and as I told my doc when we were discussing removing my band and converting to the sleeve...for all the problems I had with the band, I never regretted having it done, and would do it over again. It truly was the best decision I have ever made, hands down!!

I have not been sleeved, but was lapbanded in 2001, shortly before it was approved in the USA. I was living outside the usa at the time, and had my surgery in Europe. I did much of my research on a "board" much like this one. Here is what I observed at that time.

There were almost no regrets expressed. (Band surgery s pretty easy, the hardest part is living with it later)
People that were having problems were often characterized as being "non compliant"
Things like reflux and regurgitation were considered normal.
When serious side effects like erosion or slippage happened, it was seen as rare and frankly it seems like it was often implied that "their band was kept to tight" or "they were noncompliant so vomited too much"
During my first 2 years on the band when I lost weight and was so physically awesome (I never got under 200# but I had to exercise so much to lose weight with the band I was pretty fit! seriously) I was a person who always touted how wonderful it was, even though in reality I suffered quite a bit. That changed when the side effects got to the point I had to have the fluid removed and I regained weight. By then, I no longer posted to that bulletin board.

So, please realize that most people that post here are in the honeymoon period, first 2-3 years of being sleeved. It does not give a balanced view.

The best way to get info from longerterm patients is a group that focuses on "graduates" or people 2+ years from surgery.

Please, do not interpet my comments that I think there are big problems with the sleeve. I am telling you that reading posts on this board does not give the balanced picture is all.

Gosh you guys are SO POSITIVE!!! I've not actually decided on surgery, or what kind of surgery yet, I hope you don't mind me "sharking around" the forum and dipping in, but the information you guys are posting is SO HELPFUL to me... I am kinda scared about doing this, don't know an awful lot, and you guys are WONDERFUL for allaying my fears... (((hugs))) to you all!

Well, for the month after my surgery I was so depressed and truly regretted having my sleeve done. I am feeling better about it all now, especially since I have lost 34 pounds. I also have so much more energy. Don't get me wrong I still have issues about missing food. Grocery shopping is a challenge, especially walking through the bakery. It's all worth it in the end and I would do it again.

    Cowgirljane,
I do not interpret your comments that there are big problems, I am just trying to be as informed as I possibly can. I guess I will look for other sites too that are long-term sleevers. Any suggenstions?

As I mark off the days until my surgery, I watch a lot of youtube videos of people who have had VSG. After reading this post, I decided to search specifically for people 2 years out. There were several, and they were all positive, no regrets videos. I have seen and heard enough stories of people 2 years or more out to solidify my decision that it's the right thing for me.

I have no regrets, I was on a death march, and now all my health problems are gone--5 days after my surgery. The thing is, I am sure there are people who have regrets--they are probably the ones NOT in a support group--what this website is--and are not following the guidelines. You won't hear from them because unlike you, you are NOT towing the line.

oops, I meant--THEY are NOT towing the line....There is a 85% success rate for the sleeve--somewhere out there are 15% pissed off people who can't binge eat anymore...or are eating ice cream and cake and chips and all carby things that go down easy.

Alright so here goes as soon as i woke up i said to myself WTH did i just do! I am just one month out and have had what i think a hard time. I have gone though emotional rollercoasters up the ying yang. So tired of the taste of water and even all those sugar free add in's dont help. I have been hospitalized already for dehydration that sucked got poked everytime they gave me fluid the liquid potassium i had to drink was horrible really felt like giving up. At times i regret it but my boyfriend tells me not to think that I whats done is done and now i have to move forward. I struggle so much with water intake protein intake constantly feel like i have a tennis ball in my thorat so it makes drinking harder. I feel full alot and then that puts me behind and once you lose enough potassium its hard to get back on track without getting hydrated AGAIN! I struggle everyday to get up and push myself but i have four kids and people who love me so i cant give up. I take heartburn meds for the lump feeling but they do not work. I hear it takes time so i am waiting for this frown to turn upside down . I want to excercise but i feel like i will sweat the little water i took in out so that blows. I am thankful cause i know i could be worse and i know that there are some/many people who deal with way more difficult things in life. I struggle with my food addiction and miss the things i used to eat also just the luxury of just being able to chug some water down in one sitting. I deal with daily nausea even with meds. from what i hear things will get better so i am waiting till then. And i hope at one point i will be one of the people that say I <3 my sleeve. Hope you dont take this as negative this is just my honest journey.
