    Default Leg spasms?

Had surgery on Friday and all things considered no bad complications. I am having terrible full leg spasms. Anyone have these or know what the heck? ESP upper leg muscles spasming away.

You may need some potassium or magnesium I would give the doc or your family doc a quick call when they open to ask about that.

    Syndi,

If you began having leg spasms after surgery it may have to do with a temporary nerve compression - perhaps from being on your back for so long during surgery. Be sure to get up and walk frequently if you are not doing this already. If you feel any pain in your back apply heat with a heating pad and have someone in your support system perform a gentle massage specifically targeting the muscles working them from the inside at the spine and then out and then you can also work on the hip flexor muscles to gently stretch those with some hip flexor stretches. If you aren't sure how to do this Google "hip flexor stretches" for some videos that model the correct form and execution.

Second, consider hypocalcaemia - or low calcium levels in the blood. When I had surgery for thyroid cancer one of my parathyroid glands were removed and as a result I have to take a daily calcium supplement. If I don't, or if I fail to have a calcium-rich diet, I get leg spasms or twitching in my legs.

Since your diet right now most likely has limited dairy, your calcium levels may be low. They do make a liquid calcium supplement. I would recommend 1000 mg of calcium a day. That will help in healing following surgery and if you do have low calcium will help to facilitate the regulation of your calcium levels. If you can get a combined liquid Calcium / Magnesium / Vit. D3 or Zinc supplement that would be preferred. I believe Country Life makes one as does Source Naturals. If you can't find this in your local stores you can order online.
