Thank you both. I called the on call service and waiting to here back now. 2 of my pneumonias were treated at home so just hoping to make it until Monday. We also have snow coming down on top of icy roads. My temp is now 105 so I gave in and took motrin.

Thank you guys for your concern. I would normally agree but these are the high fevers I get with pneumonia. The motrin brought it down to 100.5 and and the on call Doc called me in some antibiotics on the strict condition I go in on Monday and see my regular Dr. So if I can make it through tonight and tomorrow I think it will be ok.

BTW< I have now maintained my weight loss for one year. I'd do it all over again without hesitation.

The numbness in the hand could be a sign of vitamin deficiency, like B12 or maybe B6. That doesn't explain the fever by itself, but being low on vitamins could compromise your immune system. Did you have your levels checked recently? Do you get B12 shots? I'm just guessing.

    Best of luck.

PS, did you have any pneumonia pre-sleeve?

Did you have reflux prior to your sleeve? Just wondering if you might have developed a hiatal hernia since.
105 is really worrisome. The antibiotics that your doc called in for you will hopefully help. If they aren't the right ones for your infection, well you are a nurse so you know what all can happen with that bad of an infection. Please take care of yourself and don't wait until monday if you start feeling worse.

Again, thank you all so much for responding, I appreciate it. Guliver I only get the numbness in my hands when I am pre-fever. I do get my levels checked and also take sublingual B12 as well as other vitamins and minerals.

THis is my history: January 2013--1st pneumonia ever (10 months post op) treated as outpatient February--fevers 16 days out of the 28-hospitalized for complete workup and had a viral liver infection, very ,VERY odd.
    March--I was ok!
April--pneumonia #2 and hospitalized for IV antibiotics got home and took antibiotics for 10 days. 2 days after I stopped I got pneumonia #3 and my Dr let me take a course of abx. at home.
In May 2013 I got pneumonia #4--Of course I was DONE. They hospitalized me again for IV and changed my Nexium to Pepcid. Up until now, that worked.

I started abx. last night and of course this morning. Temp is down to 100.7 so that is a lot better. If it shoots up again while on abx then I may have to go in... ++++ my fingers the temp stay manageable.

To answer another question, I did have GERD prior to surgery due to being so obese. I would wake up choking on acid. So probably already at risk and the nexium apparently increased that risk.

Now I am just clueless. My Dr is really good and looks at all the normal and atypical stuff. Plus he is sweet and caring and I know he's going to feel so bad that it's back.
Thank you guys again. Lots of rest and tea for me today.

As nurse, you probably know that you can get flu ( a different strain of flu ) despite having the flu vaccine. The temperature is a bit worrisome. But I am afraid you may have misunderstood some of the previous posts. Aspiration pneumonia is not CAUSED by taking proton pump inhibitors to my knowledge, but by having untreated GERD. At this point in time, you might want to give your primary care physician a call. But yes, eating late at night and then lying down can cause reflux even if you are on medication. Hope you can find the source of your problem.

Oh I know about the flu but I don't think this is the flu. I don't have any nasal congestion, sore throat, body aches. Just the fever. During my last hospital stay the doctors collectively told me that the Nexium actually did increase (cause?) my risk of aspirating. And once it happened the first time I was more susceptible. Back then I actually did find an article supporting their findings. Of course I can't find it now but I will keep looking. I'm telling you the changing from a PPI to a H2 blocker is the only change that was made. Now that I am off Nexium I a starting to hear others that have had weird effects from it. I used to worship that med! It just isn't the right one for me.

The other thing is that when I first spiked the fever, I had my husband assist me with my stethoscope to listen to my lungs. I have always aspirated into my right lung. My left was clear, both lobes. My right was clear in the middle and upper lobe but decreased sounds at the lower lobe. Even my non medical husband could hear the difference.

But I am calling my Dr in exactly 25 minutes and will see what he says. Yesterday my temp stayed at 101. Today it is 98.8! I feel better just a bit tired. I really hope no one ever has to go through this.
