Default does the sleeve conquer the diabetes and other illnesses?

Hello. I am new to this but I have been wanting to know some of the benefits of the sleeve compared to the bypass. Like with the bypass for some if they are a diabetic the diabetes disappears almost as soon as the surgery is over or shortly thereafter. I am trying to decide which to have..does the sleeve do the same thing for those of us who are diabetic?.....I would much rather do the sleeve if I can...I go for an appointment with my dr. next week and I would kinda like to know what ya'll think....Can someone answer this for me please? Thank you.

Hi. One of the main reasons that I had the surgery is because of my diabetes and high blood pressure. I still had elevated blood surgery while I was in the hospital. But I've been out of the hospital for a couple of weeks now and my blood sugar has been normal without medication. I also had to go off of my blood pressure medication because my levels were dropping to low. So, to answer your question, yes having the sleeve will help you conquer diabetes as much as the bypass will.

Yes, getting a gastric sleeve operation may resolve your diabetes.
From what I've read, 80-86% of patients with Type 2 diabetes will no longer be diabetic after getting a gastric sleeve.

Here's a testimonial from a sleeve doctor's patient where she says "My diabetes is completely resolved. I have not had one dose of Insulin since the night of my surgery."

And here's another person who said similar: http://www.endobariatric.com/testimonials8.htm

Thank you for your response...I am so looking forward to having this surgery...I am not expecting to look like I did in high school but my main concern is getting off of the medications...I have an appointment with my dr. next week and hopefully will be getting a surgery date soon.......if.....my insurance says yes.

Hi murfandpeg, I had my VSG in May and within a month my blood sugar levels were down to within normal limits and have stayed there. I haven't needed to use my CPAP machine either.

I had a liver of an alcoholic but do not drink. I had fatty deposits under my skin on my forehead and the only other person I had seem with such things, was a heavy drinker!

I am two weeks out of surgery and for the first time in five years they have gone. My skin looks so pink and healthy. As I have food allergies, the food I ate was putting my liver under considerable stress. Now I eat practically nothing and my liver is functioning much better from the obvious signs.

I still take my milk thistle tablets as I guess there is still some repairing to do but I cannot believe how well I feel from not eating.

My blood pressure is also back to a normal range so the BP tablets have gone in the bin too!

So, even other health issues can be corrected with the sleeve.

    Good luck with yours,
    Gal xx

I was released from Hospital on 1/2 pill for diabetes ( 1 Metformin with dinner had been the amount I was initially taking). I continue to take my blood sugar daily but I take 1/2 pill only when I've had mashed potatoes or some other food that will raise the sugar level. My sugar level now runs 86-100 most of the time. I will continue to monitor the blood sugar daily.
    Good Luck

    Hey,

If you are insulin dependant diabetic, you will be able to drastically reduce the amount of insulin you take, however it will not cure your diabetes.

Tablet dependant is different. The weight loss can kick start your pancreas into producing enough insulin independantly. The thinner you are, the less insulin you need each day.

I have been insulin dependant for 21 years. I am having my gastric sleeve surgery on Saturday.

    Hope this information helps

Hi jemaz, I wanted to ask you a question re sleep apnea. I'm beginning to suspect I may have it. I wake multiple times each night with a jerk! Could this be because I've stopped breathing? My brother has sleep apnea but he's not around so I can't ask him. He does use a machine at night. Thanks...
