I was given perscription Prilosec to take when I was discharged. They are capsules so I am suppose to empty the contents into a drink once a day and when I start eating food I am suppose to take it 30 min before eating for heartburn.

I have to do the same and to tell you the truth, I hate those things. I only have to take them twice a day, but I have had no heartburn since surgery. But they are also for acid reflex. Which also have only had 1 case of since the program in the pre-op stage. But I was told that this is more about preventive med in the post op stage. I didn’t ask if the breaking them apart was because of the stage 1 diet and the stomach is still healing, and does that mean we will move to taking them whole sometime in the future? I truly hope so.
My doctor requires that his patients take it for 1 year after surgery. I have to open up the capsule too. I think I have to do this for 3 months. I pour mine into a little bit of apple sauce, add my D3 drops and eat it. Goes down easy, I am careful not to chew it though.
I take the capsule, once a day, first thing. I was instructed to open it up and pour in onto something.... what worked really well for me was my liquid calcium! I am far enough out that i can take pills now but I still ahve liquid calcium I am using up - my morning dose still gets the prosilec insides. (I take petite calcium pills for the other two doses)
good news is, so far no sign of reflux or acid pain!

Isn't anyone worried about the side effect of osteoporosis? If you really research it, you will find that Prilosec and Prevacaid, (the proton pump inhibitors), leach calcium from the blood stream. The incidence of hip fractures goes up like 4000% in women who took these drugs continuously over time. Even the instructions on the Prilosec and Prevacid boxes say to only take them for two weeks I have hideous stomach acid and really nasty GERD at night and also almost every time I eat something, but I am taking liquid Ranitidine (Zantac) instead. It doesn't work as well as the proton pump inhibitors, but I am an older female and I sure don't want a broken hip or other bone fracture. I'm having trouble getting enough calcium in, the pills make me want to throw up and the liquid is soooo foul. I just keep on hoping the stomach-acid thing will "go away", but I am three months out and it is as bad or even worse than before! OK, good luck to all of you.
