Default Nausea, vomiting, weak. What am I doing wrong here

Good Morning from San Antonio TX, I am 3 weeks post op and started solids, but having a problem getting them down much less anything down. The dietician gave me Monday-Sunday menu to make at home and everything I tried has not gone down. I feel like I'm pregnant I wake up I'm nauseous I smell food I'm nauseous I'm weaker than ever and I think this has been the hardest part so far. Even with the pain of the actual surgery. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I can barely get 30oz of water. I don't want any food including liquids. I can't take my vitamins right now bc I will throw them up. I slept for 12 hrs straight last night. The drs office prescribe me some nausea meds but they make me sleepy at work. I'm getting so aggravated and miserable. Has anyone had this and will this all go away? BTW I cannot eat another piece of jello I have lived on that for a month now and refuse to eat it lol. Any suggestions.. or has anyone else gone through this PLEASE HELP!
    Shannon

have you tried the protein powder mixed in with the s/f jello pudding? one of the other bloggers suggested that as a way to get down some protein, and you may have to just realize that it will take a while for this to pass, as unfortunate as that may be :-(

    Morning
so sorry to your having so many problems, I had my 2 weeks check up yesterday, so I can have soft foods now. I noticed yesterday that i have to take very small bites and eat very very slow r it will make me sick. Have you tried popsicles? for the first week that was the only way i could get any liquid in me a sip r 2 was all i could get down and that wasn't enough, I aqso got the Special K protein packs you mix in water and made me popsicles to help me get my protein
Hope you get to feeling better soon.

    Tammy

I'm so sorry you are feeling so badly.. when is the last time you have seen a doctor for a check-up? I don't know why some people have so many problems and other's do not. I have never been ill with anything, never thrown up - I would call the doctor and have them look at you - do you take an antacid (one in the morning and one before bed?) I feel bad that you can't keep anything down, you could be dehydrated.. and that will cause you to continue to be "sick" they might have to admit you to give you liquids via an IV - dehydration would cause many of the symptoms you are talking about. Hope you feel better soon - Hugs & God Bless

Zofran should not make you as tired like other anti-nausea medications like Phenergan. Call your Dr. and have them give you a Rx for Zofran. It is a bit pricey if you are self-paying but hopefully you can get insurance to pick it up and only pay your co-pay if required. If I take Phenergan I'm like the Dormouse off Alice in Wonderland and sleeping, sleeping, sleeping.

By solids do you mean SOFT solids? At three weeks out that should be where you are at and many are still on a liquid diet around 4 weeks post-op. Anything more solid may be too much for your stomach right now.

The body is a miraculous self-healer and it can use nausea to avoid potential problems. In this case, your system may not be ready for solid foods. You may still be healing and your body is using nausea to prevent you from putting stuff into your system that could stress the area in healing and stymie the healing process. Try broths, cream of ____ soups and pureeing all your food.

A great rule of thumb at this point is to eat what will go through a strainer. Anything larger may be too much solid for your system right now and the body's natural process is rejection and nausea is linked to that.

Remember to "Drink your food and chew your liquids." The point of this is to chew our food until it is a liquid mush before swallowing and make sure to keep our liquids in our mouths long enough for saliva to mix in to aid in the digestive process otherwise we bypass a key process in healthy digestion.

Thx for that Wendy, will definitely use that rule!

Ok all now I'm scared .... Let me correct myself because I may have been so excited and scared writing this forum. I AM able to keep all liquids down just can't get 64oz because I'm so full. I don't have any pain whatsoever no fever nothing that maybe linked to a leak. I did contact my DRS office and he advised me if my urine was concentrated and yellow then he would suggest to go to the hospital to get an IV. My urine is not concentrated nor yellow it is pale and honestly other than throwing up all day yesterday and being weak I feel ok. I'm not dizzy lightheaded or anything and Wendy I think you are totally right I think I force myself to eat to much because again I'm excited to eat I probably ate to fast and to much. Bc I had no problems on Monday and Tuesday it was just yesterday that got to me. Vitamins make me sick to look at. Does anyone suggest any good vitamins bc I cannot take the flinstones anymore lol. I know i know I should not be taken my childs vitamins but at that time they were the only ones that were somewhat good and now I cant take them haha I'm going back to eating soft solids again I think I just rushed into whole solids way to fast. But can I ask everyone what they were eating around 3 weeks? and also does anyone know when your body actually heals so I don't have to worry about leaks . I really truly thank you all for your support..

Visit a Whole Foods store in San Antonio.
    Alamo Quarry | WholeFoodsMarket.com

Talk to their nutrition / vitamin person and see what they have in the form of liquid and especially sublingual vitamins. Flintstones vitamins are nasty tasting and have added ingredients you really don't need. I switched my kids to three things - Nature's Plus Animal Parade (Chewable multi), Coromega - Chocolate Orange (squeezable and tasty Omega-3 supplement) and KidzGreenz. I either pick these up at our local Sprouts or order through Vitacost online or Soap.com (the website you can order detergents and pretty much everything else from). My bunch also likes the chewy gummy bear vitamins.

You can take kid's vitamins just make sure that you are getting an adult's daily recommendation.

    I personally use a sublingual B-12 from Wal-Mart (2500 units)

As to healing time - that is person to person. You are 3 weeks plus out - so a leak would be very unusual at this point.

To help in the healing process following surgery I make sure I take Vit. D3, slow FE iron, B12, L-Cysteine, Calcium (can get this in liquid form), and a multi-vitamin. Take the iron separate by about 2 hours so that there is no absorption interference.
