Eating soup and drinking water with a meal? I mean both consist of solids and liquids...
Eating the soup alone is nutritous (protein, etc) where as drinking water helps you stay hydrated there is no nutritional value. If you drink/eat soup that may be your meal and then 30 min before or 30/60 min afterwards drink water. They are both liquid for liquid diet. I hope what I just mentioned makes sense. LOL
This is the explanation I was given.
It's about getting into the habit of separating your meals from your drinks. For your meals, you want the food to sit in the stomach for as long as possible so that it gets broken down properly by the acid, and absorption of nutrients begins. Then when it moves into your intestine, absorption of nutrients is more effective the more your food has been broken down. If you drink nutrient-free liquids at the same time, it both (a) decreases the capacity to get your nutrient-rich meal in, and (b) moves the food through your digestive system quicker meaning less absorption. Additionally, if it moves it out of your stomach more quickly, then you don't feel full as long, and then are more likely to overeat. As fat and processed carbohydrates are processed and absorbed easily, you end up getting the high calorie bits without the nutrients.
The liquid diet phase is to protect the new staple line, but it's a good time to start practising separating your liquid meals from your liquid drinks anyway.
Very occasionally I drink a small sip with a meal (like last night I had some food with chilli in it, and had small sips every now and then when my mouth got too hot), but never a big swallow to wash down food.
I actually don't eat soup unless it's a thick chunky stew or chowder, because to me, there is no difference (I lived on cream soups during the full liquids phase, but once I was done with that I never really ate soup regularly).
For example, I buy Campbell's Chunky canned soups. What I end up doing is eating all the good solid stuff and dumping the broth or straining the broth out first. I find if I try to eat soup normally as a meal, I am far less satisfied than I am compared to eating a piece of chicken and veggie side, plus I am hungrier a lot sooner after soup.
