    Question Sleeve vs Bypass??

    Ok, I tried searching here because I thought I saw a thread discussing this, but can't find it. So forgive me, but wondering would made you decide on the Sleeve over the Bypass?

    TIA

    I chose the sleeve because there won't be any rearranging of my digestive tract and my body will still absorb the nutrients from the food that I eat.

    I chose the sleeve because of the dumping syndrome. My mom and sis had bypass years ago ( not the rouen-y) but they both had dumping and my sis 11yrs out now has chronic diarrhea. Plus the sleeve was developed for people who were too heavy to bypass and they were supposed to eventually go back and have their intestines rerouted but due to theirs weight loss they didn't. So I figured if I can lose the same amount of weight without messing with my internal routes.

    I look at bypass as the 'final straw' operation. Since sleeve can be converted to bypass, I would only go sleeve first unless you are very high bmi. I chose sleeve because of the dumping syndrome and I don't think that I need to be at the bypass level yet. Hopefully I won't get there with the sleeve.

    Bypass was never an option for me. Malabsorption problems, rearranging your insides. No thanks.

    My surgeon said absolutely not for the RNY because of my history of steroid use for asthma. He said with a bypass I wouldn't be able to use steroids and if my asthma gets that bad I need them. He was only willing to perform the sleeve

    It was the sleeve for me. No re-arranging my digestive track, no dumping syndrome, most can eat what they want in limited quantities, not as many nutrient absorption issues are likely, the list can go on and on. I also had a friend who is very successful with it and told me to go for it, I would not be sorry. Good luck with your decision.

    I went from the gastric band to the sleeve but my best frien had a bypass 6 years ago, now have lots of health problems and going for a reversal to a sleeve! Sleeve is the best thing ever. No malabsorbsion only portion control!

    As the others have mentioned not rearranging of my insides, nothing inserted and floating around inside. I liked that i keep everything that i was born with it is just made smaller. Also no dumping syndrome, no diarrhea, and no malabsorbsion. Pretty much everything that everyone before me said. It has been the best thing I have ever done.

    I read the abstracts of some comparison trials;

    Weight loss, appetite suppression, and changes in f... [Ann Surg. 2008] - PubMed - NCBI

    Randomized clinical trial of laparoscopic Roux-en-... [Obes Surg. 2011] - PubMed - NCBI

    Similar on weight loss results (in fact on these trials they found superior weight loss on sleeve - unlike the common wisdom people tend to say that bypass is better), so I'd rather the surgery that is less risky and complex, does less to rearrange my digestive tract, and is more likely to result in me experiencing less hunger. I never considered bypass even when I didn't know about the sleeve option.

    My best friend and her mom both had bypass (mom 7 years ago, friend 5 years ago) and they both told me if the sleeve option had been available, they would have done it. My friend has trouble with the absorption issues, nothing horrible, but trouble nonetheless. they were very glad I chose the sleeve.

    Pre-op weight: 272 (10/22/12)
