    Default Day 2 post-op...Help!

I'm at home now and really finding it hard to get in any fluids. I drink, but my stomach feels so full and then I feel chest tightness for a couple minutes on and off. Is this normal?? My surgeon says that it is. Any suggestions on how to overcome the first few days????

I would recommend using Gas-X strips they will really help with the tightness you are feeling in your chest area.

I'm 2 weeks post-op and had the same problem 2 days post-op. Just take it slow and take in the liquids you can tolerate. Don't force anything. Everyday you will be able to do a little more. Hang in there it will get better.

My doctor encourage sf Popsicles since I didn't not have the tightness when I ate them.

Take tiny sips and then walk around for a bit ... It's the only way I can get any liquid down! Hope it gets better soon for all of us

I haven not been sleeved yet, however I've been told that ice chips are a great way to go. One of the sleevers told me to freeze my protein shake in an ice cream maker, or in a pan and run a fork through it when it was almost set, and have it like that. THanks for the gas x strips hint, too. Making a bag for the hospital and adding that the Biotene I was told to get.

Take very small very frequent sips, and for some of us water is not a liquid that goes down well. Try other liquids - crystal light, flavored waters etc. also try warm liquids versus cold and see if either of these makes a difference. Walk walk walk, sip sip sip and take is all slow slow slow.

I'm going to echo Nancy - try different temperatures. Some do better with cold, some with warm. Some can't get plain water down for months, it's as if the ph is wrong, it feels too hard. So, sometimes just adding an herbal tea bag will help to soften the ph up some. Also, you may find some help with a warm pack on your lower back about an hour prior to eating. It warms the whole area and helps you not cramp up so much, and also helps release the gas.
hope you feel better soon - remember - its so worth it!

So many good suggestions, and the temperature is important. I also used a shot glass full of liquid every so often, and set my phone timer to remind me. Also, walking helps tremendously, and I found deep breathing helped with the cramping. It does get easier, and easier. Continued success...

Thanks for all words of encouragement and advice! I can do this. I think it is just the water I am not able to tolerate very well, I will try other alternatives. Thanks again.

Hi,and when we say small sips,we mean small sips. For the first week I literally took 5ml sips at a time.I also didnt swallow the sip all at once I let it spread through my mouth a tricle a little at a time into my throat.Constantly.For me,warm caffine free tea did the trick.SF popcicles worked wonders too after a few days.

Good luck,it gets better suddenly one day.
