Default Been in the gym a lot lately...special problems for the 400lbs+

Over the summer I have worked my way up to 60 minutes on the treadmill. I go slow at 2.0MPH but the incline is 4 out of 10 so I am really sweating it up. I'm working on going a little faster and getting the incline higher.

My question is...for those 400+ do you ever notice almost a smell of rubber from the treadmill? Am I like...breaking the treadmill?

Also fitting in some equipment is IMPOSSIBLE. Or bending my legs all over the place and scooting into stuff is impossible. Anyone else having those issues?

Are there any brands of machines that are suitable for very heavy people?

how about swimming? if you have a pool available to you, the pool can be a great alternative way to get your cardio! believe it or not, you CAN work up a sweat in a pool!

don't worry, if there's a will, theres a way. even doing simple things as laundry and cleaning around the house, and working in the yard counts as exercise.. while you are looking for adequate equipment or place to work out, just start moving around! just bc you aren't dressed in a workout clothes and aren't in a gym, does not mean that you can't get your exercise on!!! also, there's a thread on here about using the WII games ( it apparently has alot of exercise games). i'm thinking about getting one myself. i've always been a fan of DDR (dance dance revolution!) and open to video games as a fun alternative to working out!

I admire you so much for making it to the gym and getting up to an hour on the treadmill! My knees are way too far gone for that, I owned a restaurant and being on my feet all the time on hard floors ripped my knees up pretty badly.... so it's the pool only for me til I get down another 50 lbs or maybe forever. I called around and found a hotel that does pool memberships. The pool is kept at a nice theraputic 88 degrees (I have myofasical pain)... it's going to cost me about a dollar a day for the year. Hoping I can heal my knees enough to get back to walking eventually with my hubby!
Again, I think it's fabulous you are getting there and getting it done!

Oh, I came back to add that I've been told recumbent bikes are best for saving the joints....
Best NSV - fitting on a kid's amusement park ride with my 4 yr old grandson!

Start weight 335, down to 218, up during gastritis. Have accepted there is no way to lose it with my hypoglycemia. Current weight 260. Currently doing 10 day sleeve reset and determined to get back down to my post surgical weight or close to it.

thank you so much ur so sweet. it makes me feel good to be admired even if it's online haha because being the big one in my family...well...you know...i always felt like a failure.

i totally did not even think about hotel pools! that is a good idea. but i don't know how they would feel about me in a burqini (islamic bathing suit). the part of michigan i live in is basically like a middle eastern country and at apartment complexes and stuff you see a lot of women in the pool wearing pants, dresses, scarves, burqinis, etc but i dunno how a hotel would feel. and i fully cover. so...we will see.

that's a good idea. thank you so much. *gears are turning* lol

recumbent bikes for some reason always make my hips hurt cuz of the way i gotta work to hold my feet on those pedals. same thing with ski machines. im so wide that the lil handles brushing against my hips and thighs for 30mins-1hr just hurt.

I understand. I know they make them with calf supports for rehab purposes ( MIL was in rehab for a while)...but I don't know if you can get one anywhere else. I can't see why the pool should not honor any clothing you need to wear for religious reasons, but then I'm in the Northeast and things are pretty mellow here as far as religion.

It’s true that there are equipments for heavier people available online, but then they are a bit heavy on the pockets too. I would suggest running, weight training, yoga, aerobics, cardio, zumba like alternatives which are not equipment dependent.

Water aerobics would be my suggestion. I used to feel very self contious about getting in the pool but soon realized that no one really cared. Especially for a water aerobics class. I'm proud of you for being committed to the gym. Keep up you good work.

I know the feeling I remember when I first went to the gym it sounded like I was breaking it. I now place my headphones in and get my workout on. It is intimidating at first, but I feel so good now it is worth it. I think I am actually getting hooked on working out. Who new, keep going it gets easier and better and your heart will love you for it. Be encouraged.
