Default Will my INSURANCE cover the gastric sleeve surgery?

I was wondering if anyone has a list of insurance companies that cover the gastric sleeve surgery? I've heard of some insurance companies will cover it and some will not. I currently have medical insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield, did anyone that has had the gastric sleeve surgery have this same insurance? If so, what hoops did you have to go through, for insurance to cover it? Thanks for viewing...

Bcbs is different in every area. U can go on to bcbs for your plan and see if it does. I have had bcbs in other places and i wasnt covered but now i have bcbs fep and i am covered. I went onto the website and read it several times then called bcbs to make sure that i was clear in my understanding of coverage. Just waiting on the 3 months of supervision as required by bcbs fep.

The insurance company covers depending on your employers benefits and what they wish to cover. You will need to contact them because people can be insured with the same company but have different platforms, or benefits depending on what your employer is willing or not willing to pay.

I have BCBS of Michigan and they cover the sleeve at 100 percent. I had to do a psych eval, 6 consecutive months of dieting, and get some letters signed from my primary care... The hoops are a pain, but from what I hear well worth it when you are on the losing side....

Insurance coverage will vary depending on what your employer has set up. Your best action is to get your coverage book out and call them to verify. I have SWHP and it did not cover until this year.

Yeah and a lot of companies are taking it off as a covered surgery. I had got my insurance and that same month they stopped covering it but I know Blue Cross, Health Net, United Healthcare, Cigna, and I think Aetna. Call your insurance carrier to see if it is part of your coverage

Our company is self insured, but BCBS manages our coverage and I was covered. Not sure, but I think that is the company not BCBS. Not sure that answers your questions, just call your insurance company.

    Good luck!

I have BCBS and everything was covered. No co-pays from surgery and for the next three months of visits. They were awesome about getting approval and my surgeon did everything. I just needed to do what my surgeon requested.

You guys are all very lucky. No insurance company in the UK will cover any kind of bariatric surgery, so we have to self-fund.

I posted something about this particular subject a while back, so I just went and found my post, and copied it. I will paste what I said here. Hopefully the information will be helpful to you.

I read an article recently about WLS and insurance. If I remember correctly, there are only a few states that mandate coverage for WLS. In the other states, WLS must be "offered" but it is up to the employer to add that rider to their insurance coverage. It adds to the cost of insurance and that is why a lot of employers choose to leave that coverage off the plans they offer.
It's too bad that we can't choose to add that coverage and pay the extra even if the employer doesn't. My insurance coverage specifically excludes coverage of any WLS surgery or any medically supervised weight loss plans. Guess they want to keep us fat so we die early and they have to pay less. Or, on the other hand, they can pay for all my complications from obesity (GERD, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc) which in the long run is gonna cost a lot more than they would pay for the surgery. I've tried to figure out their line of thinking but it sure doesn't make sense to me.
    Susan

I have Anthem Blue Cross in CA...its a PPO....In my experience, most PPO insurances will cover the procedure. I had a difficult time with mine, because there were only two hospitals that I had to choose from and of course the one I chose went into contract negotiations as soon as I was approved......8 weeks later I had a date, but those 8 weeks were so frustrating. The negotiations only happen during the first few months of the year, so this shouldnt be a concern :O)
    Cheers,
    Linds

I have BCBS FL and they did not cover. It all depends on the employer and what they choose to cover. Some BCBS may also cover because of the different mandates in different states but for most this is excluded even if medically necessary.
