    Default Scared of Post Op

    Hello!
My surgery is scheduled for 5/23 and as it draws nearer, I get more and more scared. Now dont get me wrong, I expect to have some discomfort and know that the gas is really uncomfortable(I had lap band surgery previously). The thing I am terrified of is the nausea and or vomiting. I HATE it and so afraid I will get it. Under normal circumstances I never puke. Havent had any issues with past surgeries etc. However past surgeries have not involved cutting away most of my stomach. I hate vomiting so much that I have even had moments of hesitancy about having the sleeve done. Talk me off the ledge please!!

Some people never vomit and the only reason why I did 3 times after surgery was that I gulped to much water right after surgery, and I tried to eat eggs twice when my Dr. told to try them. I think you have an advantage over people that have never experienced this because you know what your body will tolerate because you have been banded already. Don't worry it's not that bad at all as long as you follow what your Dr. tells you to do.

Good to know that I am not the only one that has this same worry! My surgery is scheduled for 5/29 and that is the worst fear I have after having the sleeve. What happens to the stiches/staples if I do?

I'm 4 weeks out and I have not had nausea or vomitting. I was really scared of that too but I've followed all the instructions to the letter and have not had any problems. Also, the doctor ordered a scapalomine patch which is supposed to help with nausea. I put it on the night before surgery and I left it on for 3 days after. I know some people have had it but I didn't and I don't normally vomit either. I hope you have the same experience. And you'll get through it and be better off for it! I'll be thinking of you on the 23rd. Good luck

I am 2 1/2 weeks past surgery and I have not vomited at all. I had some brief nausea in the hospital when they pushed the narcotic pain meds through my IV, but it passed quickly. They gave me anti-nausea meds through the IV as well if I asked for it. Once I stopped the narcotics I never had any more nausea. Take it slow, remember to take tiny sips at first, and stay in touch with what your body is feeling so you don't overdo it and I bet you'll be fine.

I'm 5 months out - I think I vomit about once a week - but it's mostly due to the fact that I forget to regulate my input and chug a beverage or eat too much. I always carry around a couple of Tums in my pocket - the minute I feel something coming on I chew them up. When i do get sick, it's very short and over and done very quickly.
I had some anti-nausea meds with me post-op. I was really not sick at all right after the surgery. That came on after I started on regular food and had to learn what and how much I could eat.

I will say this - if you can get through the pre-op diet -- you can get through post-op.

My worst experience so far is those dang antibiotic pills they gave me. Why do they have to be so horrible?

Try cutting them in half. Also, try eating a sugar free popsicle right after taking one - helps numb the stomach and settle things down. As you all may know - SF popsicles saved my life after surgery.

BTW Shawn, you've got a lot to look forward to. I'm 5 months out, no more type II diabetes, down to 1 blood pressure med, have lost almost 8 inches in my pants, down 65 lbs. It's not always easy but it's a hell of a lot easier than nibbling carrots and being hungry all the time.

I'm a little over 12 weeks and never vomit or get nauseous! Listen to your body! I can tolerate pretty much everything in small amounts (chicken and beef) can be a little difficult. But no matter what I'm eating as soon as I get that full sensation...I stop...no matter how many spoonfuls, bites or sips! I found if I give myself a minute or two...I either realize I'm full or can continue with a few more bites. This can be weird because you can literally feel like your starving and after 3 solid bites you feel stuffed! Trust that feeling...it can get pretty ugly if you don't..lol!

The only time I have experienced any surgery related vomiting was when I drank right after eating once and once after eating too much. Listen to the signals your body sends when you are full and don't gulp anything to drink right after eating! And don't worry so much, you'll do fine!

I'm scheduled for the 24th of May. I'm very scared about what happens the first few days after the surgery. I'm hoping I'm lucky and can be like others who had no problems at all. Good luck to you.

Last night I was dreaming that I kept doing everything wrong - like eating too much food, or drinking while eating, or having carbonated beverages.

You shouldn't have a lot of problems just post-op. The challenges may occur during the 3rd through 6th weeks as you add more solid food and understand what you can and cannot tolerate. I get the read that everyone is different in this - but I would give a couple of pieces of advice:

    1. Follow the rules
    2. Be flexible ( I know that sound contradictory but it isn't)
    3. Anticipate and deal with stalls (which start at about the 3rd week).
    4. Don't weight yourself every ten minutes - once every 3 days will do.
    5. Protein goes in first! And often!
    6. Sugar Free Popsicles

    good luck
