I am almost convinced to get my sleeve but was curious if I would be able to continue to lift weights and do abdominal work without any problem with my stomach. Any advice??
Hi Tom, I think you will be fine, just take it really easy in the first few months and obviously gradually build up once you do start again.
I predict that the gastric sleeve surgery will become more popular with people who are into bodybuilding and fitness/nutrition who just need an extra tool to keep excess weight off and stay lean.
Yes, as long as your post-surgery recovery proceeds as normal, you can start your workouts again at around 5 or 6 weeks post-op. Make sure your doctor knows what you plan to do and gives you clearance to do so. Mine gave me full release at 5 weeks...but he knew I was out of shape and would start out slowly and build up, lol.
Tom, I also work out daily and just had the sleeve on 03/21/11. My Doc told me before surgery my results would likely be awesome because I was in such good physical shape, other than my weight. I cheated and got on the elliptical 4 days after coming home. And actually at a moderate stride it was fine. I have been biking and walking daily and just started back w/ lite weights for upper body. I'm 3 weeks post-op tomorrow and have lost 22 pounds this morning. Talk to your Doc., but abdominal laparoscopic procedures don't give you the weakened abdominal wall that an incision line does. Best of luck to u, Peace.
Hello,
I was sleeved 2/18. I spent the night in the hospital walking the hallway to get the air bubble from surgery to go away and then started walking my neighborhood 2 days after I was released. I joined the YMCA about 3 weeks ago and do about an hour of cardio and 30 min on the weight circuit which includes abs. As a female my doctor advised me not to free-lift since I am trying to loose weight and tone right now, not body build but he did say I could if I wanted to. He did advise nothing heavy for a few weeks to allow the staple line in my stomach to heal but now I can do whatever I want to do.
Good luck to you!
