I wanted to start a thread for people who are experiencing fear as they get closer to their surgery date. I was hoping that everyone would post tips for dealing with anxiety.


My Tips:

1. Take Slow Deep Breaths

2. Focus Your Attention on Your Senses - What Do You Hear? Describe How Your Clothes Feel.

3. Imagine a "Perfect Happy Place" and Picture Yourself There.

You will be needing the same tips and strategies just as much post-op.......the mind is a powerful thing!

I was nervous and my anxiety was through the roof the week before surgery. For me it was the fear of the unknown. I knew I was in good hands with an excellent surgeon but I still felt scared. I have a few thoughts that might help:
1) Remember why you're doing this
2) Keep your eye on the prize (better life and health)
3) Get involved with a support group either on-line or in person

When I was afraid something bad might happen from surgery, I reminded myself that something bad was ALREADY happening because I was overweight and that it would continue to get worse from there. 4 weeks after surgery my cholesterol was was already down by 33 points. I'm getting healthier and gaining self-confidence.
