Drinking liquids with meals

The biggest problem that I have been having is not drinking with meals. I know we're not supposed to but don't really understand why. I do make a conscious effort to only sip a little water when I eat. Does anyone have any advice, answers, or suggestions.

PS: I am not having any issue with food going down with or without liquid.

I'm with you. I'd rather drink with my meals & eat less than do w/o the drink. ik they really want us to get our 800 cals & 75 grams of protein a day but I really don't think that is an overall prob for me. I enjoy the beverage. Never in my life have I had to be so concerned with getting ENOUGH to eat in a meal.

My dietician told me it was for a couple of reasons. Firstly you need to get the food/protein in first and by drinking other liquids, it is taking up space. Also, you don't want your food to be "washed" down.

I just take sips, enough to wet my mouth. As for the reasons why we aren't supposed to, "This is it" hit the nail on the head.

My surgeon said a big NO to drinking/food at the same time...something to do with bloating out on the drink, and not being able to eat your food contents...i did eat/drink once, and had the worse pain ever in my stomach...i won't be doing that ever again!!!!!

Yes I agree with everyone and actually I asked my nutritionist at my doctor's office what can make people fail at losing weight and she said drinking. This is hard to do but i notice when I follow this I eat quite a bit less in a day. You also do not want to stretch out your stomach. What I do is time myself I try to drink at least 8 oz of water before my meal in the hour before. Then wait 30 minutes. Yes sometimes I write down the time. Then wait another 30 minutes and then drink again.

I agree it is a very hard habit for me to break. My dietician told me to take smaller bites and to chew, chew, chew and then chew some more. It should be toothpaste consistency before you swallow. This was in the pre-opp class yesterday.
