    Default 4 Weeks Questions

I'm 4 weeks post op. I see other people and what they are eating at this junction and I see what I'm eating and I'm a little confused.

I still cannot eat eggs fixed any way without getting a little stomach upset. I can eat about 2 slices of turkey, 1/2 a hamburger patty, 1/2 a can of sardins or tuna. Fish or anything else, it's about 5-6 bites and I'm bloated. Oatmeal I can get one little package down. Liquids I can chug pretty much no problem. Cheese and yogurt is no problem.

I'm getting all my vitamins, water and protein every day. But I still don't have a lot of energy. I used to work out with 35lb dumbells. Now I do good to make a workout with 20lb'ers.

My surgeon says the sleeve will never really stretch. So is this as much as I will ever eat again? No I don't want to eat like I did before by no means, but a little more than 5-6 bites sure would be nice.

I am 4 month post-op and still a whole banana is hard to get down in one sitting. It doesn't too much bother me - however I do think about eating more just because I love the taste. I think it is more psychological and will get easier as time goes on - I just don't ever see myself eating like a normal thin person would eat ever again!

Also if you are exhausted how often are you taking B12? I was only on it once a week to begin with, but felt exhausted and now take it once a day and feel much better!

I am 5 weeks out today and I know there is not much we can eat now. Same here fish, tuna and soft fruits is what is working for me. You might want to try protein bars if you don't do the shakes. I started eating Pure Protein bars run you like a $1 each to make sure I get all my required protein in. I eat veggies that are so steamed and cooked also. Try smashed beans and soups with no pasta in them. Shaved turkey meat, turkey meatballs and I cook them in marinara sauce. I also ate alfredo chicken with veggies, no pasta and that was really good. I serve myself very little, eat some then wait an hour and eat more. I basically eat every 1-2 hours to make sure I get all my protein in. Hope this helps!

I agree with the B12 comment. I take a 500mg sublingual tablet every morning. It really does help. About the eggs. I say try again in a couple weeks, but it just might be something you won't be able to eat anymore. Everyone is different. I can eat them fine, but tuna is no good for me. It's too dry and I don't want the calories in mayo. Just keep trying, at first cottage cheese was very hard for me to eat, but now it goes down fine. I usually have a half cup at bed time so I dont have to listen to my tummy rumble. OBTW I am one of the unlucky ones that does get hungry! Good luck.

My surgery was just a day before yours. I have been on liquids until this week, so I'm just discovering what works and what doesn't. Even this week, I'm moving to mushy foods, so eggs are fine, but I'm not supposed to have some of the rest of the stuff you mentioned. I had eggs and they were fine for me, but like someone already said, everyone's a little different.

As to the overall question, is this all we can eat, it is my understanding that basically, yes. My surgeon and nutritionist said that the sleeve capacity is about 4 oz., so there just isn't room to eat much more than a few bites of most foods. So I'm adjusting my view of what a meal entails. I haven't been hungry at all -- in fact, I have to remind myself to eat and drink. But in my head I 'should' be eating a certain amount at meals. It's a brave new world for us, I think.

I was also not released to exercise at all until 4-6 weeks, so I haven't tried that (other than walking). I am eager to do some weight training too, but I suspect it will be challenging, as will aerobic, both of which rely on carbs to give us energy. I suspect we will all build back up before we know it, though.

Congrats, though; your look like you are doing great on the weight loss! Way to go!

oh, and although i'd LOVE to eat more, i'm kind of happy i have a cut off now! eating huge portions is what got me in trouble in the first place! haha! so even tho it tastes GREAT, one (or two) bite is better than nothing is what i'm thinking

People who have been sleeved along time can eat more, mostly by eating really slowly. I think it is ideal to just take advantage of the small capacity right now.

i don't know for sure, but i do think the sleeve stretches some. More importantly, all the swelling goes down eventually.

I am 5+ weeks out and feel like i can eat a good variety of foods - basically it needs to be somewhat soft, well chewed and meats are best in a sauce or something. I think the main thing I have left to add is crunchy fruits and veggies which is my next progression. I am looking forward to being able to eat raw veggies and salads again!

I take a Celebrate B12 once a day when I get up in the morning. I guess when my 3mo checkup comes I will find out what is really going on.

I really would like something crunchy too. God how I would love a small dinner salad! Overall I'm really happy,

I guess I just hate the fact that I can't even eat like a skinny person right now. I'd like to think eventually I can at least have some sort of a meal with enough room for protein and still have some room for some nice veggies.

I think it's just getting inpatients. I am thankful that I don't eat a lot and am loosing weight and I'm greatfull that I can't gorge out anymore. I'm just getting anxious for a little variety.

Hi there, I am about 2 weeks off being 1 year out from being sleeved. The simple answer is your sleeve is healing and will soften after that happens, you will then be able to eat foods and not have that horrible dumping sensation at the same time.
Quantity wise - yes once the sleeve healed I was able to eat more, but you MUST be mindful not to stretch it, because they do stretch (a fellow sleever friend of mine stretched hers, go a dangerous bubble and had to be re-operated on).
The best news is that yes you do get to eat normally again, you can eat whatever you want really - but changing your mindset is probably a good thing otherwise 'sneaking' in all the wrong foods will happen, so I eat small meals of just about any food type (bread and dough are a little hard as they clog you up), salads and crunchy stuff works just like before the operation.
I have found that I have a visual of my little stomach and when I watch other people eat huge meals my minds eye is flabbergasted that 'that' amount of food is inside them - maybe you will have the same reaction. This helps me to stay on track.
BTY - I reached goal about 3 months post op, I didn't have too much to loose with my total lose at 22kilos. I had however been previously 107kilos, and 68kilos, and 84 kilos, and 93 kilos - you get the picture....
The feeling of being thin and the same as everyone else is undescribable! Would I do the sleeve again - in a heatbeat!!!
Keep going, it is very very tough, but it is beyond worth it.
Congrats to all on your decisions!

I'm six weeks post-op and it was only last week that I was able to eat eggs. It seems like some people just have some intolerances that take longer to go away.

I am so glad you wrote this question. I am three weeks out and I keep thinking about my 4 bites or sips. That's all I can do. I don't have a lot of energy either but we're still healing right? I can't even do a whole package of cream of wheat or oatmeal. I am hoping I get to know when I'm full the bite before the pain start, that's what I'm going for. I can't wait for no pain eating or drinking! Eggs gross me out. Good luck. You are doing great. Why do we miss eating more???

My sleeve does not like eggs at all. No matter how I fix them they always come back up. I have the same problem with chicken and fish. Pork however stays down but only three tiny bits. I find B12 helps a ton with my energy though not required by my doctor. I just started lifting weights and it is SAD. I am dying with 10 lbs on my arms. My legs are much stronger. When I met with my trainer last week I wanted to cry because I was so embarassed my arms are so weak now.

I tolerated poached eggs really well and boiled eggs made into an egg salad (with greek yogurt and a dab of miracle whip). Scrambled eggs seem to sit more like a rock.

I have yet to try scrambled. I may do that this weekend to see what results I have. I tried shrimp last night for the first time. I thought that would be a little tough. Boy, I was wrong. They were as smooth as silk. I know what I'm eating tonight <GRIN>.

I also wish I could learn where that last bite was before the pain and anguish set in. Right now it's somewhere around I think I'm getting close to full and the next bite, I'm in misery.

I read on here somewhere chili was ok. I bought some canned (yuk) turkey chili to try. Has anyone else had experience with it around the 4.5 week mark?

Yes, I was allowed chili at about 4 weeks. It was fine, but, I found it a bit too spicy. Spicy foods don't normally bother me, so that was a surprise.
