We have to worry about Dumping with the sleeve?
I thought that was only a by pass issue?
What causes dumping and is it the same/different as the bypass.?
How do you feel when this happens?
I do have dumping when I eat something I shouldn't like a Venti carmel frap. and its just that gargle of your tummy then you better get to the bathroom. I don't get it much just when something is off or to much of something my tummy doesn't like.
I worry more about being stopped up then dumping. I also had this before the surgery so it could just be my body. I never had the OOps and had to change clothes or anything so its nothing that bad. (just don't be in the bathroom when I come in cuz WHOA) LOL But like I said everyone is different and this is only what I can tell you about the dumping I get. I've been told the bypass is a lot worse and this is the main reason why you lose more weight with the bypass.
Just remember everything is new. It's like your a baby learning what you like and don't like, What you can and can not eat anymore. I use to love spicy foods but now I can't take them. I get bad heartburn or worse sometimes Dumping so I stay away from that.
Every week I try something different just to see if my tummy is okay with it. Its weird sometimes it likes watermelon and then sometimes it doesn't...
I hope this wasn't to blunt. I like to be open and tell all because that's what I would want from someone else
YES we have this issue as well. My surgeon didnt think it was an issue 2 years ago but now he is saying I do have it and at first they thought mine was from eating carbs and sugars but after a lot of trial and error i found its from chemical unnatural things in food so I have gone to clean eating and avoid it most of the time. I have had it lately because we had goat meat for the last 2 months instead of pork or beef and so now with the change in fat content i get dumping as well. For me it feel like i have the flu with in minutes of eating my intestines cramp bad and i just run for the bathroom.
I have just been diagnosed with dumping syndrome and it sucks big time. When I drink a protein shake, have a yoghurt, eggs and other dairy products after 10 mins I feel so sick and clammy. I have to lie down and just feel so poorly.
My consultant wants to see me tomorrow to go over my diet etc and find a way forward.
I haven't eaten anything that I shouldn't and eat slowly etc. I don't drink with meals and am so fed up with this complication. I just hope it improves.
My stomach hurts and I have to run to the toilet - work is becoming a nightmare
So - yes dumping syndrome happens and it's crap
I only experienced this when I ate too fast within the first 2 months...I have only throwed up 3 times total since i had surgery andI will be 6 months out next week.
I experienced it a few times in the first 6 months, always when I over did it on sugar. Today, at almost a year out, it doesn't happen to me anymore. If I eat something really high in sugar, (which is rare) I don't feel as good as usual, (tired, gassy sometimes) but I don't remember the last time I dumped.
Interestingly, I agree with everyone. Seems we CAN get it. I went out with some girlfriends not too long ago and ate something that had a pretty high sugar content. Within moments, my heart started to race, I suddenly felt very weak (like I had run up a mountain), a little sweating.... No pain... but the racing heart frightened me. So... no more super sweet stuff.
First, I've never had a dumping episode, but I'm only 3 1/2 weeks out.
I've read in scientific literature (will try to find it) that dumping is not a common response in VSG patients, although it can happen to some.
I've also read in my doctor's instructions that just because you have a bad response to a specific food, it doesn't mean you will always have that response. He encourages people to wait a few months and try that food again, to see what happens.
I do think the sleeved life is a big science experiment. What works for you now is what works for you now. But that doesn't mean it will work the same way for someone else right now. And it might not work the same way for you -- or them -- down the road.

It feels like your going to die. Or at least you want to die. Luckily for me it didn't last long. I had one episode when I switched from clear liquids to full liquids. I think it was the PB2 I added to the protein shake. I don't know what I was thinking. I guess I thought I had added it before surgery without problems and it would give me some extra protein. I was seriously miserable for an hour. I actually had plans to go to a movie with my husband and daughter. I ended up having them take me home. We had to stop every 5 min so I wouldn't barf in the car. Luckily I didn't. Still haven't vomited yet...
One thing too is that I was told liquid slides pass our stomach and right into our intestines if there is nothing to stop it. So your stomach doesn't get a chance to even "filter it" before it hits your intestine, your intestine is like WTF is this..... Get it out! Get it out!!!!
Same thing with slider foods... they mean they slide right past your stomach so you can eat more of them.
I don't know about anyone else but my doctor told me to try and stay away from juice's because they slide right on thru and are packed with natural sugars and also the store bought ones contain even more sugars and other bad stuff our stomachs don't even get to "taste"
He said its better to eat the peach instead of juicing it because the stomach gets to eat it before your intestine does (he makes it easy for me to understand ) LOL!
But for some of you, you should be tested for lactose intolerance, if eggs, Cheese and milk do this you may have become lactose intolerant and this does sometimes happen after the sleeve. My doctor always asks if anything upsets my stomach because he is making sure I don't have that. So far just spicy foods and well there is nothing he can do for that... I just don't eat them anymore
