    Default Duodenal Switch?

    Hi everyone!

Just wondering if anyone on here considered/is considering having the duodenal switch surgery? What are your thoughts/feelings/experiences regarding this procedure? I have decided that I will certainly be taking back control of my life and opting for surgery. I need to consider all the options before deciding what this means for me and I would appreciate ANY insight you can provide

    Thanks!

    Katie

It seems like its kind of the sleeve plus a malabsorptive feature. Dumping not as common as bypass because the pyloric valve remains intact. I would certainly consider that over a bypass, but overall I am not a big fan of malabsorption. Restriction was what I felt I needed and so far its worked out okay.

Not sure what you could have done wrong.

I considered it but (1) I wasn't crazy about the prospect of dealing with room-clearing gas releases for the rest of my life -- people would tell me it's okay as long as you don't work with people, or can handle eating nothing and drinking only green tea when you might be around people, but I work in close proximity with people five days a week. That could be bad. And (2) my insurance only covers it for people with a BMI of 60 or higher and my BMI at the outset was actually 59.9. So when I learned about that insurance requirement I stopped considering it at all.

I decided against it because of the high risk of complications. I am okay with taking supplements but I could still be at risk for not getting enough.

You can get this surgery in Brazil for 10,000 dollars. I have a friend that had it done, and she recommended me to have it done over my wanting to get the sleeve. Clínica Marchesini Curitiba - Gastronet.com.br is the website. She said she wished she could have stayed at the hospital for a long time, because it was so nice and the people were so friendly.

She lost a lot of weight and has not gained any back. She is tiny now.

I believe the Duodenal Switch is better for getting and keeping the weight off. But It is more complicated and cost more.

I am strongly considering changing my mind from getting the sleeve to getting the switch. She told me I would not go wrong in doing so.

    Have a great day!

In terms of percentages of average excess weight lost, yes, the DS is "better" that regard. But if you are committed, you can lose 100% of your excess weight on the sleeve.

However, doctors in the states here usually don't perform it on those other than the super, super morbidly obese. And those that get a DS are the sort who may need a sleeve first and then something else later, because they have so much to lose. There are definitely a LOT of complications and risks, much more than the sleeve and bypass.

I honestly think if you have your mind set on the DS, do it in the States. Don't go to another country. I'm serious. Read up on the complications. Since the risk is much, much more elevated, if you go out of the states, you risk major costs to you later if you have to go to the hospital after surgery. I would try to get it covered by an insurance, if at all possible.

The bypass is not something I even considered because they leave the stomach in and functioning just shut down at the top. I have a history of cancer so not using that organ but keeping , it wasn't a good deal. I love the sleeve and I've lost 66 lbs since September 20. It's the best move I have made so far

The switch is a highly complicated procedure with way too much room for error in my opinion.

When I started looking at weight loss surgery, I weighted the pro's and the con's of every surgery. Ultimately, if they could find a way to remove the lapband once it is no longer needed, that is the way I would have gone. But, they don't do that. So, I went with the sleeve.

When the procedure starts re-routing bowels and causing malnutrition, there is something very scary about it.

The switch and the Rout-en-y are the Two procedures I think are from the stone ages and are going to start dying out. I don't think they are very safe and the impact on your body later in life is worrisome.

If you want to lose weight I would really urge you to look at the sleeve or the lap band.
