Hunger pains right after surgery
I have had constant hunger pains since coming home from the hospital. I thought this wasn't supposed to happen. Anyway, I had surgery 1/21 and and I'm up to about 35 oz of fluid and 30grams of protein but it doesn't seem to help when I drink. Actually when I drink I feel this uncomfortable gurgling sensation. Is this normal? Does it go away? When have people tried to advance to thicker fluids and purees? I feel like I'm starving.

I felt like I was starving after surgery. Your body is in shock. It is trying to figure out what's going ob. Even though you think your hungry I'm sure you realize once you start eating that your full. Your body will start producing gerhlin like crazy. That's the hormone that makes you feel hungry. Its completely normal.

My doctor advances his patients very fast. The 3rd day I was allowed full liquids and day 5 pureed but very thin to start. You should be able to do Greek yogurt or sugar free puddings which you can add unflavored protein powder to. That will increase you protein intake and should help with the hunger. The gurgling is totally normal and does subside some. I still have some at 10 weeks out. Some days my daughter can even hear it and laughs about letting the alien out. At least it is not as uncomfortable.

Thanks! My doctor had recommended thin fluid for a week, then thick, then pureed the 3rd week but I may try to sneak in a yogurt, anything to give my stomach something to hold on to. :)
I was really hoping to have a "hunger honeymoon" that people talked about- not being hungry for at least a few months. I was hungry a lot before surgery though which is why small portions didn't work for me on a diet. I was still starving- actual stomach pain. I was thinking with removing the part of the stomach that makes the hormone though it would help. :(
Re: Hunger pains right after surgery
At first i had lots of acid (like reflux) and pains, I wasn't sure if it was hunger or pain from the surgery so for the first few days i took the pain meds and the antacid that my doc gave me. I get the girgling too, I also get bubbles stuck and it hurts. I have to jiggle a little, stretch my belly out (look up, push bum back, lengthen torso) and the bubbles come up. Just keep having thinned out protein every 3-4 hours and tea or some sort of water in-between. Try to keep your belly full (you'll need the water and protein) and my surgeon said it'll help the stomach get things moving. Warm & cold water will also help you heal the wound (hot cold therapy works on the inside too). I hope it gets better for all of us. This morning my shake has berries, Unjury unflavoured protein, greens powder (by Genuine Health), omega fish oil, chia seeds, EmergenC (vitamin C powder),a handful of kale, coconut water (lots of it) and a probiotic.

Thanks. That sounds like a good coctail!

I'm sorry you have hunger pangs already, I couldn't even fathom food at that point in my journey, all the smells of chicken broth and the Muscle Milk shakes made me so nauseous, I had to make my hubby get rid of it. My appetite kind of returned about day 7 and I've had a few times where I feel hunger pangs utif I don't think about it they go away quickly. I have cheated with a Girl Scout cookie every so often but can deal with only having one and to the whole box as I would have before.
