6 months out, how many times a day should I be eating?
Hi Friends,
I had my surgery 6 months ago and couldn't be happier with the results. (Just in case any of you are wondering, I do work out every day at the gym. Sometimes twice a day.) Anyway, my question is, How many times a day should we be eating? My surgeon says only 3 small meals a day. It should be mostly protein, he wants me to have 70 to 80 grams of protein a day. Meanwhile everybody else tells me I should be having a midmorning snack and an afternoon snack. Even our school bus driver who had gastro sleeve done 18 months ago tells me I'm not eating enough. Can anyone share with me what they were told by their doctor and how may times per day you are eating. Thank you dear friends

My doctor says if you can get the protein and nutrients in with three meals and don't suffer weakness/low blood sugar, then that's fine. If you have low blood sugar problems, or diabetes or some such, three smalls plus snacks might be better. They caution me against "grazing" (eating constantly all day) though.
Do you feel you've been successful eating 3/day?
Re: 6 months out, how many times a day should I be eating?
My nutritionist and doctor did not set a limit to the number of times per day that I should or should not eat. They wanted me to aim to eat as much like a normal, fit person as possible. My goal is to eat 1200 calories a day, 100 grams of protein, less than 60 grams of carbs, and at least 100 oz of water at 9 months post op. At 6 months post op I was told no less than 1000 calories, 60 grams of protein, less than 50 grams of carbs and at least 100 oz of water.
I burn between 600 and 700 calories at the gym daily.
Generally I eat the following way:
before the gym (I go 6 days a week at 4:30 am): protein shake
after the gym: protein rich breakfast (such as Quest bar, PB on 2/3 a banana, or sausage and cheese on a flat bread)
lunch at 12:30: lean meat, veggies, fruit, cheese, nuts and beans in some combination
snack at 4:00: plain greek yogurt with sugar free jam or vanilla greek yogurt, or a cheese stick
dinner at 6:30: lean meat, veggies, fruit, cheese, nuts and beans in some combination
Re: 6 months out, how many times a day should I be eating?
I am 5 1/2 months out and have done very well too, about 7 lbs from goal. Here is my deal, I eat such small amounts there really is no difference between a meal and a snack for me. So I just eat when I get hungry focusing on protein first. I usually get hungry about every 2 1/2 to 3 hours, then I eat something. I try to get lean protein and vegetables and fruits. Of course I slip sometimes, but never with breads and other bad carbs.
Re: 6 months out, how many times a day should I be eating?
I eat 6 small meals a day. My meals are all the same size really, but I'm still a newbie. I can only eat 2-3 ounces whether its a snack or a meal. I know my thinner and healthier friends (not from WSL) eat every 2-3 hours to keep their metabolism moving. Even if its some nuts and a slice of apple, it keeps the body moving and digesting.
Re: 6 months out, how many times a day should I be eating?
My doctor says 3 meals no snacks or protein drinks.

Yes Luke, I feel like I've been successful with the 3 meals a day but now my weightloss has slowed down to 1 pound a week and i feel myself hungry between lunch and dinner. everybody is telling me I need to add a snack or 2. They say my body is in starvation mode thats why I'm losing so slowly. Best Of Luck To You!
