Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
As most of us are aware of and appreciate, there is very little after care needed after a sleeve. However it is important that we should know that we need to take vitamins for the rest of our lives. This is due to the fact that Vitamin B12 is synthesised by "Intrinsic Factor" which is produced in the stomach. Long term loss of this vitamin may result in anaemia later on. Sorry to sound pedantic, but treatment is regular injections of B12 - much easier to swallow a tablet. :)

Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
Just what vitamins and supplements should one be on post-op. Right now I'm on a multi-vitamin but I know I should be taking others. Any one care to enlighten us? Lorna :)
Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
I read up on Vitamins after sleeve or bypass. The essential ones are: up until 1- 2 months post op: multi-vitamin complete; either /or 1 adult chewable or 2 children's chewable. Or adult liquid vitamin-once a day. children's liquid vitamin-twice a day.
1-2 months post-op you can switch to a regular multi-vitamin with iron so long as it's a regular size pill and not the big long ones. (once a day)
1-2 months post-op B12 on a daily basis. (once a day)
1-2 months post-op Calcium with Vitamin D (twice a day)
My doctor told me all I needed the first month were the Flinstone chewables twice a day.
Apparently when you go for surgery they load you up with vitamins in your IV's so you can make it through the first month post-op.
Optional supplements: an extra iron pill, A vitamin C, D, & E pill, zinc.
These are optional but not really required as you get these in smaller amounts in your multi-vitamins. Lorna :)
Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
I am absolutely fanatical with my vitamins and minerals. I know what it feels like when you have deficiencies and it is not fun. I take 8 different tablets a day now and have done for nearly two years.
I take:
1 vitamin B complex (all the B vitamins)
1 good quality multivitamin
2 milk thistle
1 vitamin D
1 Iron tablet
1 Biotin
I also have my blood taken every 3 months and check my levels. I only buy the highest quality vitamins that I can afford and I never miss a day taking them.
In winter I take immune system boosters like Vit C and Zinc as well as magnesium. This is over and above the multivitamin.

Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
I take 2 childrens chewables 2xs a day, Sublingual B total once a day. My Dr wants me to take calsium too but I have been caususe because I have high levels and end up with kiddny stones.
Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
Yeah, I'm wondering about vitamins also. Since I'm only day 3 post op he said hold off on any vitamins until I see him on Monday. But he just said Flintstones chewable to start off with. I guess I'll figure it out as I go along. I did invest in a GNC member card today as I got my IsoPure and whey protein...YAY FOR DISCOUNTED SLEEVE GOODIES!!
Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
The doctor told me it was fine the first month or two to take the Flinstone chewables. During surgery they give you vitamins in your IV's to hold you off for several weeks until the stomach wall heals. One WLS web-site I went on to said you shouldn't introduce adult swallow vitamins until 2 months post-op.
And they should be regular size tabs. Not the big horse pills. If they are the big horse pills you have to use a cutter and cut them in half.
At about 6 weeks-8 weeks out you do have to start the other supplements because at that time your body will need them. Lorna :)
Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
I do one gummie mens multi vitamin twice a day :)
Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
equate childrens chewable multi vitamin
Solaray Vitamin D-3 Lozenge 2000IU
Solaray Vitamin B-12 5000 MCG
Bariatric Advantage Chewable Iron 29 mg
Solary Biotin 5000MCG
Solaray Calcium Citrate Chewable 1000 MG
i like the solaray stuff because the price is good and what they call lozenges are basically chewables. they dont taste bad either, i can take a couple of them and toss in my mouth and chew away with out even needing water.
i take everything at my first break at work which is about 5 hour after waking, except the calcium i take at night before bed, since your not supposed to take it with the iron
the vitamin d is new, was told after my first set of blood test that i was a little low.
the vitamin be i take daily because supposedly id doesnt digest / or absorb as easily after the operation so i take it daily to make sure and my number are good so i will continue with them.
Re: Vitamin intake after gastric sleeve.
All I have is 1 Berocca in the morning!
I have my blood test every 6 months, everything is always very good.
When I work away, I do not take anything.
I suppose it comes down to the person and what they eat normally.
