High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
This morning I was at my doctor appointment with a PA and they tested my urine since I am having a lot of muscle cramps. They said I had a high level of key tones and protein in my urine. I am 3 weeks post op. I am getting in about 60-70 ounces of water or powerade a day. I am also getting about 400 calories a day. 2 protein shakes included.
Anyone else struggle with this?
Is this a concern, or kinda typical with this type of surgery?
Re: High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
The high ketones are a response to high protein diet. I would expect this result with this type of surgery. Did the PA not give you some guidance on the results?
Re: High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
She is drawing my blood to check a few things including my kidney function. I have my one month appointment with my surgeon next week. This was a routine check up with my normal doctor.
She told me I NEED to get the fluids in more since this is a sign of severe dehydration.
I know the keytones aren't really the problem, but the protein level is.
Re: High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
Here's what I know...when I was pregnant I had the lovely severe version of morning sickness. I had to wake up each morning and test my urine for keytones. From the test results I would figure out how much Iv fluids I needed that day. Keytones are a sign that you are extremely dehydrated and your body is breaking down muscle which is not something that you want at this point because muscle burns fat. I wouldn't wait to talk to your surgeon. Mine told me it was totally normal to get dehydrated and if I did to not hesitate to come back and they would pump me up with some Iv fluids. I know that no one wants an Iv but if you are showing keytones I would say it might be a good idea. Get your body function back to normal and a fresh start.
Last week I was so sick and I realized it was from dehydration. I almost went to the hospital but I managed to get a liter of gatoraid down the next day and I started to feel better. I'm still not taking in all my fluids because , well I don't know, it's not for lack of trying I just have no room.
Btw, my gp didn't even know the surgery I was having so I'm not relyin on him for anything surgery related! Good luck. It sounds like you are doing everything right but your body is showing you need more fluids so just try if you can.
Re: High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
Agree. Sounds like they are on the right track. I meant to say get hydrated too. Problem is there can be some damage to the kidneys with the protein. Hope all is well. Honestly if someone had checked my labs that first week or two I probably had that too. I know I was dehydrated. It was soooo hard to get the fluids in. I still struggle.

So for what its worth here is what our pre-op nutrition class told us before surgery. My surgeon is a bit strict when it comes to protein and fluid intake. We are to hit 100 ounces of water and 90 grams of protein a day before we are allowed to move off the full liquid diet. We were told to prevent damage and dehydration to make sure that we were always getting more liquid ounces than grams of protein each day. Just something I thought of being it sounds like your getting a lot of protein in compared to your liquids. Hope this helps

...seriously?! I'd still be on full liquid, 9 months out. I can't even get 100 freakin ounces of fluid in now. Yeesh.
This just makes me think of kidney stones, yikes. I had them, twice, after surgery (never before). First time was about a month out, then again a month and a half after that.
Sounds to me like you're getting in enough fluid. Could just be because of all the extra protein and your body is adjusting. Hope it's nothing serious!
Re: High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
I try to get 100 oz of fluid in per day, but I don't always get it.. I do get a lot of protein in, but that's because I'm addicted to quest bars. lol
Re: High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
I know what you mean Stephanie, and according to my Nut. she says there are people out there still on liquids 6 months out. The only thing I can say is Atkinsons track record is one of the best in the country, and all the support groups, nutrition groups, yoga classes, and 100 ounces per day, have some wonderful results not only here in Las Vegas, but all around the world. He gets you where you need to be with your weight but offers all the support you may need to get you there as well. I did some research about the liquid amounts though, and wonder if he doesnt push all those cold liquids especially, because the more cold liquids you drink, the harder your body has to work to keep your core temprature up. Drinking lots of cold liquids actually increases your metabolizm according to what I have read. Either way, I have a post op appointment this morning, he is going to be upset with me I am sure. I have gotten almost no protein in this week and managed a whopping 30 ounces of liquid at best yesterday. Guess I am not a poster child for fluid intake and protein achievement....
Re: High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
I get up there with protein sometimes, and if I paid closer attention could do it regularly (I make sure I get min 70). Fluid though, nope. I'm trying to push myself more and see how much I can get down, to see if I can get that increased. I am probably around 50 oz a day... not so great. I realized I was low, and am counting ounces again to get up there. But 100, damn. That's great you've got all that support! Awesome! I attend support group meetings on my own.
Re: High Key Tones and Protein in Urine
if you find that you can't drink more fluids, my suggestion would be to purchase some Ice pops and keep them in the house, then inbetween drinking have a pop. Keytones are nothing to ignore, you want to get in that liquids. you don't want to have kidney disease. The muscle cramps are a strong indication. and can harm you if left untreated. so make sure if you continue to have this problem that you call your dr. good luck to you!!! I have kidney disease and I worried about the amount of protein that was needed at the begining with keytones. but so far so good. good luck to you!!!
