Can you regain weight with the sleeve
Im considering getting the gastric sleeve procedure done in Australia, I always regain weight after big losses, so I thought that maybe a sleeve would fix this, unfortunatly I have to wait until march 2012, bit of a bummer I turned 30 2 weeks ago and wanted it this year.
Im worried if I get it done ill lose weight and regain it like always, im an emoational eater as well.
Does anyone know if this can happen with the gastric sleeve procedure?
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
I can't imagine regaining a bunch of weight with the sleeve, but I guess anything is possible!! BUT i think you would really have to work hard at gaining weight with the sleeve! I've always regained all my weight plus more, but with my sleeve i just can't see that happening.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
I would like to see an answer form someone two or three years sleeved!
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
This operation is only a tool to assist you in managing your weight. There's nothing magical about it. You can absolutely regain the weight if you allow yourself. It's a matter of choice and simple calorie intake. If you choose high calorie/high fat foods and eat often without exercise, you will gain weight. My experience is you'll have to try much harder to accomplish that with the sleeve, but if you're determined to gain weight, you will.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
You can regain weight with the sleeve. Your stomach has gone from the size of an American football to the size of a banana. In time if you overeat, your new stomach will get bigger. That is why it is important to only eat a little bit at any one time. Weight loss is slower with the sleeve than with banding, but after 5 years the results are about the same with both.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
In addition to what was already mentioned... if you eat ice cream and/or drink alcohol, you'd be drinking your calories and would absolutely gain. This is a TOOL, its not a magic pill. It's up to you to keep your weight off, not your sleeve. Your sleeve just helps you :)
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
Some have gained their weight back plus extra. GS is just a tool along with healthy food in much smaller quantities and exercise. If you have a decent doctor they should have covered this.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
Yes, you can regain what you lost plus some. Here is just (one) example: local male patient here lost 100 lbs in about a year, but his small meals consisted of McDonald's McNuggets, he'd have 1 or 2 max, but it's fake, unhealthy, preservative ridden junk that's not real-food on any standard. He gained back 130 lbs. Don't let anyone tell you that you cannot gain it back, because you can by not following the plan and eating right.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
This was my #1 question before getting the sleeve. I wanted to have the DS done because statistically the regain weight of people with the DS was much lower. I know I can lose weight, can do it without surgery, but what I have never been able to do was maintain it. The answer is yes you can regain the weight back. Yet it will be much harder. My doctor explained their is a failure rate in every WLS. So any one can regain their weight back regardless of what surgery you get. The sleeve is a tool, and after research it seems to be the best tool with the least complication rate. It will much harder to regain the weight with the sleeve then without.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
Take a look at the five and six year studies. basically from what i read .. Most of us reach goal or close to it.. But half the people gained half their weight back at the six year mark.. Which is really a good result. Basically if you lose 100 pounds you may struggle years down the road with that last 50 pounds. Thats as far out as the studies go at this point. They are mixed with male and female and all ages.. Its not specific..
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
Our doctors said, it is a tool, if you work with it, it will work. But if you keep eating a bit more than you should you will stretch out your stomach again and defeat your purpose and regain the weight.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
had the sleeve done april 9 2014 lost 55lb and have gained 7 back. still have over 100 to lose
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
You absolutely can gain your weight back I've seen it with 2 people so far.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
The stomach will stretch just a little but will never be anywhere near the same it was. I am three years out and have seen monthly the x-rays of my stomach. It has stretched .01% back after three years. People are way to obsessed with scales in the United States. If you drink unhealthy drinks (ie: soda, sugar layed drinks etc.), and eat fatty, fried, poor quality food your body will dehydrate consistently. You should measure your weight loss not by a scale as those do not account for dehydration, salt, water retention etc. You should measure your weight loss by inches gained and lost. A scale does not account adjust for muscle gain etc.... The best advice my Dr.'s around the world ever gave me is "ditch" the scale. Scales are horrible enough and do little to encourage people but for patients who have had a bariatric surgery the scale is a useless piece of equipment. We retain water, etc. differently then those who have not had a bariatric surgery.
Re: Can you regain weight with the sleeve
Yep, you can regain. While you have a small stomach and can't eat a lot at one sitting, you could graze and eat every hour or so all day long, no problem.
