Re: Blue cross blue shield
I have BCBS Horizon of NJ. They required a visit with the psychologist, surgeon and two visits with the nutritionist, in 3 separate months, consecutively. So I did surgeon in Aug, Nut & Psych in Sept and 2nd Nut in October. I hit a snag with my cardiac clearance so I had to wait, by then doc was booked up for Nov, but I got the 1st appt in Dec.
Re: Blue cross blue shield
I have BCBS as well. I've haven't had any over the phone consults, but things seem to be moving pretty fast. I have my surgery date, and my first NUT appt. Today I had my psych eval and tmrw I have my gastro eval. So far so good! Glad things are going well for you!

I had my first nutrition appointment yesterday. Insurance requires one, but I will have two because they said its too much information to get in one visit. I think we're both anxious and impatient, but it will happen!

I have BCBS of NJ.... On 10/1/13. I went to see the surgeon, he gave me 5 things to complete. 10/15/13, I had 1 visit with the NUT. Had my PCP send letter. They confirmed insurance, on 10/5/13, Blood work and Upper endoscopy on 10/30/13 and my Psy evaluation on 11/5/13. I called the surgeons office on 11/6/13, and I have a surgery date of 12/2/13. I think it's CRUEL to make someone go through 6 months of dieting and several appointments with the physiatrist. I'm so blessed. One month from decision to have it; to having it. 12/2/13 surgery date.....
Re: Blue cross blue shield
I have Highmark BS (Pennsylvania). I had to complete 6 months of supervised nutritionist diet, an EGD, Psych consult...preop class, labs...and I'm now 11 days away. I started this process Jan 2013.
Re: Blue cross blue shield
I have BCBS of Ga. I Had a 3 month process, 3 nut. Visits, physcologist eval, letter from my PCP, upper GI, all done now. My 1st Dr.'s visit was 8/16 and my surgery date is 11/15 - not too bad.
Re: Blue cross blue shield
I had BCBS and they approved my surgery very quickly. I could have had the surgery in 3 months but i had an emergencey so it was 6 months. I ticked all the boxes Morbidly obese, life threatening illnesses..high BMI...
Just 5 months out and 72 pounds off none of the above applies... good luck i hope you get it all sorted is the best thing i have done regarding my health!

I have BCBS Federal. They were rather easy to work with as far as I was concerned.

I had a similar experience with BCBS NY except that once all of my to-do items were done, it took two weeks to get the approval back from the insurance company and I have to go ack to the surgeon on 11/26 to get my surgery date. I'm hoping these next two weeks fly by.
Re: Blue cross blue shield
I have BCBS Of MS and my insurance will not cover anything related to weight loss, no doctor supervised diet and definitely not any WLS. They consider it cosmetic. Mississippi is the top state of obesity. I had to pay for the surgery. I guess they would rather pay for the heart attack I had and the knee replacement I had instead of surgery to prevent these. Both of those surgeries probably cost them over $75,000. Oh yea, and would rather pay for blood pressure medicine, high cholesterol medicine and prescription for my joints. Go figure.
Re: Blue cross blue shield
I had BCBS Healthy Indiana Plan and it was super easy to get coverage - my surgeons insurance specialist said they are one of the easiest ones to work with. They did not require the 6 month physician supervised diet. (Although in fact I had done one two years previously.) I did my initial consult September 13, my psych eval Sept 20th - followed up on the recommendations of my psych eval by attending monthly support group on Oct 3rd, and getting a note that I had established a relationship with a therapist on Oct 7th. My surgeon submitted the paperwork to my insurance company on October 11th and was approved October 15th. My surgery is scheduled for November 20th.
