How can you tell if you have a hernia?
How can you tell if you have a hernia? Something is just not right with me. Monday will be 3 weeks after my July 16th surgery. At the end of the first week post op, I felt great. Then I swept my porch and front walk and hurt myself. It doesn't seem like it's getting any better. I had to take my son shopping earlier and when I went to sit back down in the car, my left side hurt so bad I yelped. I had to drive the 20 minutes home leaning to my right because I was in so much pain. I just took my last two vicodin and I'm still in pretty decent pain as I sit here typing this.
I have to return to work on Monday, but I honestly don't know how I would drive the hour to work if I still feel like this. I can't afford to take any more time off. Also, I've had my gallbladder removed and part of my left kidney removed and I never had this kind of pain this far out. Even with the partial nephrectomy (kidney), I was maybe a little sore into the 2nd week. It never felt like this. Am I just overreacting? Is this normal? I know you can still feel pain up until 4 weeks out, but this seems severe.
Re: How can you tell if you have a hernia?
I think you should contact your doctor.

I do plan on calling the doctor Monday morning, but it's only Saturday. :(
If it gets to be more than I can handle, I guess I would have to go to the ER tomorrow or I'm sure my doctor or his partner must be on call, right?

If I were you I would go to the ER. If you feel that there is something that isn't right you should definitely do something about it. You know your body more than anyone, and it's better to be safe even if it's nothing.
I haven't had my sleeve yet, but my doctor has informed me that if I feel that anything is wrong and she isn't available right away to go directly to the ER.
Good Luck!

I hear what you're saying and you make sense, but it doesn't seem like that severe yet. As long as I sit in the proper position, I'm just fine. If it's still bad in the morning or gets any worse, I'll have my doctor paged and see what he says. I was hoping to find someone who went through this. I know people have posted about their hernias here, but when I did a search, I couldn't find anything.

Does it hurt all the time or just some? I know I had pain iny left side showed my dr and he said its because he had to stitch the muscle and I probably pulled on it but pain usually goes away by 4th week when stitch dissolves. The problem is I'm not a dr and won't know if it's the same thing

I feel slight pain all of the time, but there are times when it gets fairly intense. I know this surgery is not the same as when I had part of my kidney removed, but I am pretty surprised to be feeling this kind of pain this far out.

Yes, I think you should page your Doctor, only he can properly diagnose it. If he is a good Doctor, he will either answer/return the call or have a trusted fellow Doctor on call to help.
Re: How can you tell if you have a hernia?
My best friend's mother passed away today, so I didn't get a chance to call the doctor. I had to sit with her while her mother was passing. I couldn't let her go through it alone, so I remained silent about the pain and most of the time didn't really feel any. I'll call my doctor's office first thing in the morning.
I really do appreciate all the responses. This has been a horrible weekend and I just couldn't deal with one more thing.
Re: How can you tell if you have a hernia?
OK, I spoke with the nurse today and she said what I was describing was completely normal. She said if I was still feeling like this after another week, they would then want to see me.
Re: How can you tell if you have a hernia?
Very happy to hear you are OK!
Glad you contacted a medical professional.
