I've got hashimoto's thyroiditis and my twin nieces have lupus and we've all had bariatric surgery.
One of the girls eats better than the other - high protein, good vitamins, etc and is doing well. Hasn't had a flare in the year+ since surgery. Her sister just isn't as good about her eating - eats mostly dry cereal, toast, drinks alcohol, smokes doesn't take vitamins. She's been sick off and on and is currently in an active phase.
As for me, I'm doing well. My meds did need an increase which is apparently somewhat unusually for hypo folks who seem to need less meds as time goes on when losing weight, but not so for hashi's because of autoimmune's tendency to get worse until it's done advancing and I'm still at that place...anyway, they did go up less than expected this year. I won't say I'm a poster child for perfect eating, but I do get at least 100 gms of protein a day, keep my sugars under 20 and carbs under 40; take my vitamins big time and exercise at least 5 days a week ( I swim )...
I guess the upshot is, its up to you to eat as well as you can possibly do to keep your immune system fed.
It's pretty simple stuff. Protein first. Always. Then if you have room after your necessary protein, have low GI cooked veg (later raw), then if you still have room, some fruit and then starches. You really won't have room too often for anything but meat and veg for the first few months.
Hope all goes well. It sounds like a lot but really it becomes a way of life pretty quickly and having the extra weight off will help your immune system function at it's best.
I have Hashi too! as well as PKH and a Meningioma. Looking forard to getting the weight off and hoping my joint pain decreases! I have stopped the prednisone and hope that will help with the weight loss as well. I do eat well nothing wight no sugar no boxes or processd foods....just always eat too much of the good stuff! I'm glad i found the forum ....learning alot about the journey!
I have MS, and was really concerned that I was going to take a serious hit after that sort of trauma to my body. But honestly, it was much worse after having a baby. I have a little numbness, a little Difficulty walking for the past week or so, but nothing near the bed-ridden for a month experiences that I'm used to. Maybe this whole skinny thing has more benefits than we know! :)
