Vomiting right after surgery?
For those of you who have had the sleeve or another bariatric surgery, did you vomit much during recovery? Now that I've gone and bragged on how well my husband has done today, he has thrown up twice- once in the recovery room, and then just a few minutes ago (this last one was about 14 hours after surgery. I'm thinking it's because he either tried to drink too much too quickly, or because his stomach wasn't ready for apple juice, even watered down. There was a little blood in the vomit (or it looked like it to me and the nurse, anyway). Is that normal?
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
When I was in the recovery room I was throwing up a lot and it had blood in it too, my hubby freaked out. They told him its normal because they did cut out ur stomach and some residual blood is in ur lil tummy. When I was able to drink liquids I threw up for 2 days and figured out myself I was drinking too much. I was only able to hold down 1/2 oz every 30 mins. That was my experience and I was told it was kinda normal only because my dr said he made my stomach extra tight.
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
Dont drink fruit juices. Try just plain water at first or weak crystal light. Has he had the barium swallow test yet? Tell him to drink it Very slow.... I always vomit with that and this time was the same. Also he will need to take his anti-reflux meds! Best Wishes

Thanks everyone! My husband is doing much better now... The doctor still isn't sure why he was throwing up exactly, but as long as he is able to hold down liquids, the doctor isn't concerned. Hubby hasn't thrown up in about ten hours now... hopefully that won't change now that they aren't giving him a new IV of nausea medicine. He has been sipping water, protein shakes, and bits of jello for the past two hours and doesn't seem to have any problems so far.
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
I threw up nonstop for the first 48 hours and the doctors and nurses all said this was pretty normal. The first 24 hours was straight blood but after starting my juices and liquids it was like it cleaned my stomach. It has been 5 days now and I haven't been even barely nauseated again. Very rough 48 hours but now feel pretty good and ready to go to work. :)
Good Luck!
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
I threw up the first day after but I had less gas pains as a result. My roommate didn't at all. But then she started after the first couple of days and had trouble for weeks after with vomitting. I have only thrown up once since and it was at 4 weeks. I don't think I overate, but up it came!
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
i was vomiting too because i demanded from my surgeon to remove the levine tube. I think the vomite is worse due to the nausea from the general anaisthesia. I was a mess for 3 days i stayed in the hospital. When i got back home i felt much better.
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
Maybe its because the choice of liquids they had him consuming. My doctor requires all of his patients to only consume clear liquids for the first four days. The day of the surgery the only thing I could have was ice chips. The following day it was chicken broth and water. He also required to only consume 4oz of liquids every hour for the first three days. It was worked well for me but now I am in day 5 and its hard for me to consume protein shakes, jello, yogurt without getting an upset stomach. GOOD LUCK HUBBY
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
I was vomiting blood in recovery and after each walk I took the first day. I also vomited during the swallow study... but after that - all was well. I started taking in clear liquids and I was so happy to have them!!
I really think it was due to nausea from the anesthesia.
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
Hello, my mom just had the surgery last week. However it's been 5 days and yesterday she has vomited everything from Water to medicine. Even injections and and IV. We see the doctor tomorrow but is this normal?
Re: Vomiting right after surgery?
Not in my experience, no. Your mom could have a problem with dehydration. Hopefully the doctor will be able to treat it tomorrow.
