Angry Shopping for post op clothes, big vent

I gave in yesterday & went clothes shopping for clothes that are even bigger, because I know I will be swollen after my surgery & everything I have now is already quite snug. Which didn't thrill me, it seems like money wasted. I won't be this size long, let alone a bigger post op size. But I know it will be worth it not to be squeezing into tight clothes - can't wear that hospital gown on the plane home after all!

I go to nordstroms, and this little teeny tiny sales girl who looks like 12 and must weigh 80 pounds is grabbing things off the rack for me that are even bigger than I need. The skirt she picked out could have fit 2 of me, she saw the look on my face and said she could get me any size from extra small to...infinity I guess. K, sweety I don't need extra small clearly but the one she handed me could have served as a camping tent. I picked the next size down which still was precarious enough that the elastic might have fallen clean off me.

Then she grabs off this A line - swing top and tells me it could be a dress. I said no, that is not a dress for someone my age. To which she laughs & says Yeah maybe you are right. Ok, I walked into that one but why be so bitchy & snide? I mean even for someone young you would look like a total skank wearing a dress that stopped 3 inches below your crotch - unless you are wearing leggings or something underneath them.

The tank top I got was gapping at the armpits so I asked to try the smaller size. She gave a sideways look to my midsection & said "no, I don't think that would be a good idea. It might be too tight at the waist." I tried the next size down & it fit fine, but at that point I was too pissed to buy because I didn't want her to get the sale.

I get it that I"m fat, but that doesn't mean there is no limit to how big my size should be. Or that I need a lot of snotty attitude from miss Pretzel stick. Why be like this? I was as skinny as her when I was her age, I can't imagine being like that to anyone, let alone a customer.

You will not be *that* swollen after the surgery to warrant new clothes - save the money for smaller clothes!!!

I wasn't swollen at all. I guess I'm not sure why you think this? I definitely didn't wear bigger clothes after surgery then before. I just wore t-shirts and yoga pants because the buttons on pants rubbed my lowest incision.

call the dept and talk to the manager - nordstroms prides it self big time on customer service. they will be very angry about this type of treatment and will DO something to rectify. you are important and deserve the best treatment. i am sorry about this experience

Not that it's right but are you surprised by this attitude? I never had such encounters but then again I also wave pesky sale clerks off telling them I will let them know if they are needed. But gotta agree with what others said, just tshirts and leggings or yoga pants will suffice. I sure wouldn't spend money at Nordstrom's for clothes that I won't wear in a month. Goodwill and thrifts shops all the way. Hell even now that I am below my goal I just picked up some nice sweaters last week at a thrift shop.
I guess I laugh this crap off unless saying "Yeah I might be fat but you are stupid and I can lose weight but you'll still be stupid when you get up in the morning" (Actually said that to someone once lol)

I don't have a lot to wear at this point except jeans that are quite snug, my sweats & gym wear / yoga type pants are old, small & so dorky looking that I only can wear them to PT or around the house. They are bad! I am in this mess because I have been gaining badly over the course of the past 8 or 9 months, & kept saying I wasn't going to buy clothes until I'm smaller. I have heard read some posts that said your midsection will definitely not be smaller a few days after surgery - & you won't want tight clothes squeezing the area that has post op discomfort. Don''t know if some had no trouble with that, maybe it's individual.
I am not on any special diet before the surgery except for 3 days of clear liquids. So I am not going to be losing any significant weight before the surgery like many do. I'll see what I can find cheap though. I did find a pair of pants I can wear to dance class afterwards - at least for a while, if the weight loss helps decrease my back pain enough. Loose / big clothes are ok for dance, it's normal to wear bigger / roomy clothes there.

You might want to consider sweat pants, some of them look like pants although they are softer and oftentimes have more "give" plus they are pretty inexpensive. I usually get cold on planes, so this may be a comfortable option for you. Congratulations on your decision, good luck to you on your journey.

It seems that overweight/obese people are the last of the groups that is still politically correct to insult and abuse. When I took my early out this past Jan 31st, one of my male co-workers told me: "Good luck with your retirement. I give you a year." (Implication: I had a year at best left to live.) I looked at him and asked: "Why would you say that?" He shut up and walked away.
Some people were not raised to be sympathetic, polite or considerate. I have a Big Dog shirt that I love with the saying I can't fix stupid. I say a short silent prayer for these folks and also one that I never act like that.

Why not get some leggings or yoga pants? Even though I am below my goal and don't need the comfy clothes I still live in mine during the week - they are comfy enough for me to work from home and if i need to run to the store I do without having to change. Leggings are cheap and they will shrink with you as you lose the weight too. The yoga pants I have were more than the leggings. You can find leggings at any walmart or target for that matter. Even a Dollar General or Family Dollar. Ii buy mine usually online but that's just cause I like the convenience of online shopping.

    Old Navy too http://www.oldnavy.com/products/plus...eggings.jspwal

Definitely tell the store manager. And as others said, you won't be swollen. Stick to a comfy t shirt and yoga pants. Most likely, you'll be smaller after surgery anyway, not swollen!

Thanks - the post was around this time but a year ago!
I am pretty much to goal now. I am so glad I did this. I haven't been able to stop the clock on aging, but I am a size that feels like "me" again.

I may not have been heavier in the first few post op days, but my mid section was pretty sore & so for me anyhow it was a good idea I got some clothes even bigger in the waist than I normally wore. Even at my largest, at my pre-op weight.

I am used to making a small plate of food, but still struggle with just how small that plate of food should be. Like "which 7 or 8 bites of food do you want to enjoy?" small. So weird to HAVE to stop 1 or 2 bites from finishing a teeny half sandwich. Never much of a clean plate kid growing up, bad habit started in middle age. I am still definitely a work in progress.

    Congratulations to you Jennifer!
I'm still hovering around 125. My back pain is still a problem, but my doctor has read me the riot act on not being more active. She told me if I got more out of shape cardiovascularly, etc, my body would put on fat. She said even with eating a lot less it would happen in time. So I am pushing myself to go to my dance classes & walk 30-60 minutes every day with my dogs. Hoping this helps me lose that last little bit & more importantly maintain the weight loss over time.
