Red face How are you handling your family's eating after surgery?

I am finding that after the surgery I have become critical of my families poor food choices which is hilarious because I am the one that had to have surgery! I am 2 weeks post surgery and at first they were hiding eating because they knew I couldn't eat what they were eating. Since they stopped hiding I have become critical! HELP! The sleeve has created a monster! Haha

Welcome to the board. I think when we make this decision and ultimately go through with it, we become very aware of what's going into our mouths. We also become very aware of what others are eating and it's all too easy to scrutinize that person eating a bacon cheeseburger or this person slurping down regular Cokes like it's water. What you have to remember is we all choose to eat the way we do, even after surgery. If your family still chooses to eat what they're eating and not join you on this path to a healthier life then you have to respect it. You can't make them stop eating bad food. Sure you can encourage better options like grilled meats and veggies, smaller slivers of cakes and pies, etc but if they don't want to do it then don't force it. As for being critical about it, you have to learn to turn that part of you off or at least dial it down a notch when meal times roll around. Don't focus on what's on someone else's plate--focus on your plate and focus on chewing, swallowing, and finishing your own meal. Being critical because you're concerned for their health is fine, because you never know if others will start following your ways once they see your results. But being critical for the sake of it does no one any good.

Anyway, best of luck to you!

I think this is normal. I do this with my children and I tell them, I don't want them to need surgery because I didn't teach them how to eat right. I still let them have some junk food, but we talk about if it's healthy or not and how many calories are in it. I want them to understand the consequences of bad eating habits early on.

Since I am the cook I have started cooking differently. I add more emphasis on vegetables. I give sugar free jello as snacks etc. My husband has always been physically fit,but my son has not so he is adjusting to my new way of cooking and loves to go walking through the neighborhood at night. Lead by example and they hopefully will follow.

So normal. Not only am I critical of what people eat, I wonder how in the world they can eat so much. Funny how soon we forget how much we consumed. I also find myself looking at people and thinking, "Your only hope is weight loss surgery." I want to share this amazing tool with everyone. But that would be plain rude.

    Good Luck - Bonnie

Most of the time my husband fixes healthier meals so we can all take part in being healthy since my surgery. Other times they have pizza or burgers or something of the sort and he usually fixes me a turkey burger or something I can eat. They are usually pretty good at making sure dear ol' mom can also have choices and not be excluded. it doesn't bother me if they are eating or drinking something I can't have. I just know why I decided to have this surgery and that keeps me going.

Because i knew it was going to be a tough thing to get past I figured my family should go into the same good habits i am so we all can make a lifestyle change so i have made my home a junk food free zone. no soda no processed crud its simply not allowed. i told my hubby if he wants to eat that junk he can do it away from me but because our kids are so sensitive to chemicals in foods they cant have it either so no point in having it in my house. I get critical when my mom claims she is eating clean the way we do and then she goes and buys soda. My 4 yr old find the soda in her closet and convinces her to dump it out. LOL
