Default Advice needed: Any sleever that runs races....

I have been reading and the person working with me, to prepare me for up coming 5k's has been giving me some advice..
How does a sleeved running eat / drink before a race .
One suggestion was dry cereal or a banana....which means no drinking before eating ,during than a hour after..
Another .. Nothing morning of before race.
The person working with me a small chicken salad sandwich an hour before ..
    She wants protein and carbs.
I am thinking a non dairy smoothly .or protein drink 30 minutes before run. I do know I can not drink a dairy product before race.. I did get an upset stomach witht that.
Since I am in Florida and it mAybe hot ,I wll be able to sip during the race if needed..
Any runners please : how do you eat or drink before a running event.

Don't over think it. It is a very short race, so just do what you normally would do for a breakfast meal. I have been running for 12 years (except this past several months when I got too fat )and I don't even carry water with me unless I am running an hour plus.I am not sleeved yet but that is my advice. It is always best to hydrate well the day before,,not so much an hour before.
I would just have whatever you have for breakfast,,,wait 30 mins then sip up until the race.

Aqua, I don't have any advice. I just hope you have a grand time on your Disney run. I might put that on my bucket list too! Btw, I really like your new profile picture. =)

The rule about not drinking and eating at the same time is a rule for general daily use - (1) to make sure the food stays in your stomach and keeps you fuller longer and has more time to digest and (2) so you dont wash it out and be hungry again right away (one of the methods for "defeating" any weight loss surgery). Its good advice, but not "medical" advice - i.e. you wont hurt yourself if you dont follow it sometimes. You may slow or stop your weight loss if it causes you to graze more, or you might end up eventually with some vitamin deficiencies. But that would be if you made it a very regular habit.

For running a race, ignore it. Do what you need to have enough energy (eat carbs) and stay hydrated (drink before, during and after if you feel you need to). Bring an extra snack or two and use them if needed. One day here and there of not following the eating/drinking rule is not going to make any difference at all. WHat you do every day on average is what matters.

Good for you! This is a lifestyle change, and running a race is a good thing! Support your body's needs!

Thanks all.. LOL ..The Disney 5K is not until Feb.
Which will also my year sleeve-aversary ! In Feb .2013, I would get tired out walking even half mile.. Now I can do 8.5 miles in the AM, as long as I get up early ,before heat and humidity .
The person "training " , a friend is a REAL serious seasoned runner. She does the Boston Marathon and finishes with the best.
I remember awhile back reading about the "Disney Races" and thinking that would be so neat "to be able to do that".
When I had first met "M" she had just returned from Boston. I told her about the Disneys and she said "let's do it.I will train you."
That was in May but we were planning a month trip up North and she had some travel plans.. We are retired. I was thinking of doing Disney ,sometimes in the FAR future .. But we started with me increasing my "slow walk" to Town Center to walking the road around our community 1.7 miles. Than she started having me walk faster... I can now do 8 .5 miles in just under two and a half hours..
Now Disney is time qualified and I am working to a 15 minute mile for that race .
We are so registered for others...one in Oct.. and one in Nov. She is also looking at a Dec. one.
It seems even with the races being short as races go 5K, you need to be a the race site over a hour before.. You are there a while after...I guess that is the reason I am focusing on how to eat on race days..still can not believe this is something I am starting at 63!

For me, if I am going to run for more than 5 or 6 miles, I make sure to eat a piece of fruit about half and hour before I run. It gives me the quick fuel I need not to bonk. Anything where I am running for under an hour or so, my sole goal is hydration. So, I drink at least a bottle of water beforehand, and carry one with me if it is hot/humid. I have taken Gu packs with me when I have went out for 10 milers in case I needed a boost. I haven't needed it yet. But, with the Gu, I could still drink as needed, as it is liquidy and a very small quantity. Alternately, she could use the gummies or blocks and just suck on them and let them melt in her mouth. That would still allow her to drink as it would be liquid when it went down.

Boot camp is similar to circuit training. There is a trainer and he has us working out by doing different sets of exercises including running and weights (we bring our own weights).

As someone else said, the 5k is short enough not to worry about. If you get up to longer events, thats where thinking about carbohydrates will start to come in (both pre and possibly during once you get up to HM or similar), but i wouldn't give it much thought now. I've done 10k events and sprint distance triathlon, and now about to start half-marathon training. I've been reading about nutrition and there's no reason I won't be following the same advice as for other runners. There's nothing about having a sleeve that would mean you shouldn't follow the same guidance as other runners.

I am an avid runner and am training for a 15k in October and a Half Marathon in November. My pre-run is either oatmeal with protein, or a protein shake with almond milk and 1/4 c berries or banana. For during the run I use either mini Lara Bars or mini Kind Bars (around 100 cal) and sometimes I will use energy gels depending on the distance. My rule of thumb is to refuel every 45 minutes during the run.
My weight at start of my 2 week pre-op diet was 232
My weight on the morning of surgery was 221
