    Default Accidental Happiness!

The family and I went to a Thai restaurant for dinner yesterday and I ordered a large bowl of Thai Coconut and Chicken soup and water. I was the one that paid and suggested going out to dinner because my family is worried about not being able to go out to dinner with me again. Thai food is great because it gives the family what they want and I can order their soups and everyone's happy. But, getting back to my accident... I was so engaged with our conversation that I was taking sips of water from my glass not even realizing that it was from the forbidden straw in the glass of water. Probably half way down the glass of water is when I stopped abruptly and my daughter looked up and asked, 'what is it Mommie?' I told everyone that I'm not supposed to drink from a straw! As they continued to eat, I stopped for a while waiting for something horrible to happen and nothing, absolutely nothing.

So I ask, what is supposed to happen when you drink from a straw? I'm researching it today so that I don't become over zealous about the thought of drinking from straws without knowing everything I need to know. This was a happy accident for me. I hope I find that it may be alright for me.

I drink occasionally from straws. I also occasionally drink soda. I haven't spontaneously combusted yet.

My doctor said no, so I haven't done it even though I would love to when drinking my protein shakes. Congrats on getting sleeved!

My program has no problem with straws. I even drink my water through a camelbak bottle with the big straw. Good luck!

Straws are like anything else, fine in moderation. Sipping from a straw is ok, just be careful not to drink to much, everyone is different, your stomach will let you know when you have done something wrong. Good luck.

When you drink from a straw you take in air. This makes you feel fuller faster.

My medical team cautions on avoiding straws as you are more apt to take in air when drinking. This can cause discomfort especially while the sleeve is healing.

Don't worry about hurting my feelings because I guarantee you not one bit of my self esteem is tied up in your acceptance.

Nope none. As it always did, it sometimes leaves me a bit gassy and i then burp, so drink in small amounts.

I have always used straws. I started a couple of days after surgery. It helped me take in the fluids and I take in LESS air than trying to drink without a straw. YMMV, of course.

My program says no straw because you can drink too fast or swallow air leading to discomfort. Yet they promote the Camelbak bottle which has a straw. Go figure!

I did some research over the past couple of days and some doctors say yes to the straw and others say no. My clinic says no to using straws so when I have my next visit with them in June I will ask if and when it will be alright. I'm gonna have to monitor my 'haste' when eating out in the future. It was purely an accident the other day however and I do want to do this the right way. Thanks for all the good advice!
