Default over & under breast implants?

Just curious about ppls opinions & why fors? My question is what have you been told & what do you know about whether breast implants should go over breast muscle or under the muscle advantages & disadvantages? What is your experience? I'd sure appreciate some input since this is where i always turn for info.

I had a breast augmentation done 14 years ago and my implants were put under the muscle. I went with my doctor's recommendations and I was happy with it.
One thing to keep in mind - the "shelf life" of implants. Not sure what they are now - but back then, they were about 10 years. 1 of my implants have leaked internally and so now I have 2 different size boobs. because of my weight, you really can't tell with a bra on - but once I have my surgery (in less than 2 weeks) and I start loosing weight - i think it will be very visible to see the difference. I know you have had your surgery already, but it's something you don't really think of when you do it. hopefully after loosing weight I can have then redone also.
But very glad I had them done back then.

I had a mastectomy on my left breast in 2007 and got an implant under the muscle. It was awful for me. Constant muscle spasms until I had it removed 18 months later. I am sure others will come along and offer a comparison. The life of an implant is still about 10 yrs.

Under generally looks more natural, but also tends to come with more post-op pain and issues. That is just what my friend who is a nurse told me when I asked her this same question.

its the same cost but i have found out that very thin women will look like they have 1/2 coconut shell for boobs its better for them to place under the muscle....if there is still some boob left it will look more natural over the muscle & it heals with less discomfort. I have been doing my own research theres lots more i could add but this is all i want to put here now....thnak god for the interrnet
i had gummybear implants placed over the muscle feb 25th & there is very little discomfort at all. I am very happy with the look already.

I know nothing about plastics, and really only considered it for my arms, but now I realize my boobs are going to be pretty sad. I've always been well-endowed, and now its like they're just emptying out. I don't think I need implants, but a lift. Does anyone know if that's feasible? I don't want to do anything for quite awhile, let my body settle into its new weight and see if anything springs back. LOL!

I just had a breast lift and silicone implants under the muscle less than 2 weeks ago. I went with my surgeon's suggestion; I had lost over 120 lbs. and had gone from a 44DDD to a 34A (just skin and hardly any breast tissue). I had a lift which required him to remove quite a bit of skin and he put 350cc implants under the muscle. Based on my experience it's a more painful recovery and I was under anesthesia longer. It's hard to tell what the final result will be, but so far my breasts look good. I chose not to go with large implants because I wanted to look natural and in proportion. During the consult I told the doctor the look I was going for, he agreed and both of us thought 350cc would be a perfect size. I don't know what bra size I am yet since there's still swelling and the implants haven't fully dropped into place yet. But I'm wearing a 38 Walmart zip-front sports bra 24/7 for compression.

I have read that having implants under the muscle allows for mammograms to be performed more easily and that there's less "rippling" than if they're placed over the muscle. It's a personal decision of course. Good luck with your decision!

I haven't had breast implants but I was recently talking to a friend who has. She had hers done under the muscle and has the incision done under the breast because her surgeon told her this would allow her to breastfeed normally if she chooses to have more children. Apparently if they do the incision around the nipple you have a much higher chance of doing damage that would make you unable to nurse, same goes for implants above the muscle. They also perform the operation with incisions toward the underarm and these are fine for future breast feeding as well. Again, I haven't had them and this is just what I heard from a friend! Good luck to you!

I am so glad I found this thread because I'm about to get a new set of girls and I've been toiling over this decision. I haven't had a consult yet but I do know which doctor I want to go with. A friend had silicone under the muscle and they were beautiful!! She was up and moving around the next day but was sore for several weeks. But again, they looked fantastic!!
Also, my mother had implants put in when I was little. She had saline and one of them ruptured when I was about 3 (1976 - eek, I just gave away my age) so she had to get them both done again. She has had no problems since then. She is 70 and they still look great. When she has mammograms done she always forgets to tell them and they have to ask. When she tells them yes, that she does have implants, they always compliment her on what a great job her plastic surgeon did. Lol. 38 years later! I have been asking her about her experience and she honestly doesn't remember as much as I'd like her to, but she thinks she had them done submuscular. Her scars are under the breast and barely visible. She told me to go with saline under the muscle so that's what I'm going to do.
Now this is the part that gets me. My mom, who has always been thin with a great figure, just told me this about 4 years ago. She's never told anyone except my dad and her sister, who had hers done at the same time as my mom. So, my whole life, I've thought my aunt and my mom had great racks never knowing they were implants. When I was a little girl, I remember looking at my mom and thinking "Wow, I'll look like that some day when I grow up". LIES!!! Two DD lies!! Four if you count my aunt's set!! Lol. I actually felt cheated when she told me. I didn't believe her and made her show me her scars. I was in complete shock. Total deceit! BETRAYED I was!! Lol. Well, hopefully now she'll be the example for me for what mine will look like when I get them. Lol.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just need to be better.

    It's a puzzle

I was told during consults that really what you should do is saline, under the muscle. The reasons never really seemed all that clear to me. What I actually had was "gummy" style over the muscle. They look very natural. They feel natural according to my boyfriend...haha... but they don't feel that natural to me. I am told that some women have very very firm implants and mine move like a womans breast should. I don't feel the edges or anything like that. The best part is I have NO visible scarring. My surgeon did the lollopop incisions and the darker skin around the nipples completely hides the scars.
