    Default Fluids

So my surgeon and the dietician are telling me contradictory things. My surgeon says I need my protein shakes daily PLUS 64 oz of fluid. The dietician says the protein shakes count as the fluid requirement. I drink 2 shakes a day, which are 11 oz each. If I count that 22 oz, well, then I am reaching my fluid goal. If I don't count that, I'm not. I try to get more fluids in but it's just hard. The surgeon and the dietician are in the same office, but they don't agree with each other. Surgeon doesn't want me to drink decaf tea, and the dietician says it's fine.... What have others been told. Do you protein shakes count as your fluid intake??

I was always under the impression the PROTEIN SHAKES do count towards your 64 ounce fluid requirement that I have yet to achieve in the three months since I've been sleeved! Surgeons don't know-listen to the dietician. As far as the decaf tea goes, my Renal doc saids anything "brown" is not good for the kidneys...it creates a "sludge" that sits in the kidneys. I was told that years ago. So, any kind of cola, tea, coffee is really not good for anyone, I guess. Add that to all the Protein we are (or are suppose to be) eating and our kidneys are already being taxed quite a bit!

I was also told that the protein shakes count towards the total fluid requirement. I'm still having trouble meeting the 64 oz even with my protein shakes too.

I dont usually count my shakes as my fluid only as a meal. I force down as much water every day and usually I can get in at least 64 oz.

It takes time to get in all the fluid requirements, I just in the last 4 days have been getting in all my fluids and I am a month out of surgery. As for counting protein shakes as fluid I personally don't I just count water and things like flavored water diet snapple etc...

There is some protein that does count. Like nectar fuzzy navel. The like milk based ones however doesnt count. This happen to me. I was only getting 20oz more then my 4esa protein drinks. So my bowels impacted. I also was confused. However was told decalf tea was fine. I try to mix it up just in case. Honestly also my doc is crazy strict. I still struggle to get them in. However he told me as long as i got 50oza on top pf the 4/11oz shakes. Thats what i was told. Good luck
