Default Question: Have your tastes changed?

I've read a few times that people no longer like the taste of foods they used to like. Has that happened to you?

Ya I now hate popsicles, broth and yogurt,,ha ha. I think right now, most things I just don't care about eating. And when I eat a bit it just doesn't have the appeal it used to. Not sure it is the taste or what it is. Sorry,,can't be more helpful but I have heard a lot of people say what you are saying.

My tastes have changed some. I used to crave and eat a lot of sweets, especially chocolate, but now I don't really want it.

My tastes changed radically. 20 months out and I still can't eat a lot of the food I used to love. Still haven't tried any wine or alcohol. NEVER ate icecream...I love it now!!!! God Bless...Mem

I think that's true for some people. Dunno if it's true of all people. But mostly what has happened for me thus far (I'm 10 weeks post-op) is that stuff is changing all the time. Changing bad, changing good, changing again, changing again and again and again.

Regarding one's food tastes changing, many of us are in "ketosis" (look it up) due to the high protein / low carb diet we're eating for months post-op. Being in ketosis always changes how things taste (ask the Atkins dieters). As we add more carbohydrates, our food palate could change -- or not, depending on how we're eating.

Also, many of us post-op (for a while at least) are on pretty heavy-duty antacid medication -- to help our new tummies heal and to reduce reflux. Reducing or even nearly eliminating stomach acids also affects how our gastrointestinal system works / feels.

A few specifics -- I've tried wines post-op, and my palate still thinks they taste great. Some folks who love (and know) wines say wines taste different, and not in a good way. Salmon is luscious to me, as is chicken; some folks longer post-op than me can't stomach either one. Beef is not currently my friend. Others love beef.

So far, I've had to be flexible and not freak at every thing that happens. I figure eventually things will settle down, I'll get used to my new normal.

My tastes used to run toward brunettes but after the sleeve, I now like blondes and brunettes.

    Hope that helps.

I wouldn't go as far as saying I no longer like the taste of foods I once liked, but I definitely noticed that some foods taste different post sleeve in that they don't seem to have the same "pizazz" .
    Post op meds?
    Significantly reduced ghrelin production?
Post surgery trauma to the stomach?
    I don't know.

Maybe it will change back, maybe it won't.
I need to eat to live not the other way around like I use to, so I don't mind even if it is permanent.
From what I gained, that's nothing.

Inside some of us is a thin person struggling to get out, but they can usually be sedated with a few pieces of chocolate cake.

My tastes have not changed. I don't like hot dogs like I used to, but I think it was because they were cheap ones. No taste change at all.

My doc warned me that this would happen to some people and gave me the advice to "smell everything before you eat it."

I am driving my family nuts with "lemme smell your food" since I am not yet on full solid food... bwhahahahaha!

I smelled some bacon the other day, OMG I could smell the salt in it and it was a huge turn off. I discovered I no longer like pineapple flavored stuff. The smell of coffee from a drive through window made me want to retch.

Since I'm only 3 weeks post-op though, I imagine this will all continue to change as I go. It's scary and exciting at the same time!

My scale and I have a love/hate relationship:
it loves to tell me I'm fat; I hate & ignore that rude POS.

Yes, your taste buds can change after surgery. For me I could no longer tolerate the sweetness of a protein shake that I had used before surgery. I haven't experienced this with anything other than that one protein shake, but I assume it would happen with other things too. I just haven't encountered that with anything else.

I think mine have changed a bit. I use to love chicken but now it just doesn't taste right. Prior to surgery I didn't drink coffee and now I seem to crave it. Other foods I just don't eat because they don't sit well in the sleeve.
