What meds were you sent home from the hospital with?

Hi there. I had surgery this passed Tuesday. I didn't realize until today that I wasn't sent home with any antibiotics. Is this normal? I know I wouldn't be able to swallow a pill, but it seems like with any procedure or surgery they give antibiotics......any insight? Otherwise I feel fine. Still sore....trying to get my protein shakes in and also my fluids....it's been difficult at times, but I feel ok otherwise.

They sent me home with liquid pain medication, and a capsule that I could break open which was for acid reflux, I think! I didn't even really need to take all of the pain medication because I felt pretty good, and only had to take the other for three months. Each doctor is different though! Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

No antibiotics -- just liquid pain medication which I didn't use, and prilosec.

I'm pretty sure I was given antibiotics through my iv before surgery but I don't think any was given after. Hmm...

No antibiotics, co-codamol which I didn't use and liquid paracetamol.

I also had 28 days of Omeprazole

I forgot, blood thinning injections about 14 days worth and those horrible stockings which I stuck out for a week. It was supposed to be 6 but I couldn't stand them.

Hi, I had a gastric bypass, but the diet and meds are pretty much the same. You're able to take pills, but you have to space them out and may have to cut them in half. I wasn't given any antibiotics after the surgery either. Sent home with pain medicine, Prilosec, and vitamins. I was surprised how little pain I was in. Best if luck to you! I will be sent home with Lovenox (blood thinner),omeprazole (Pepcid), Zofran (for nausea) and liquid vicodin. I think they said that I will get some antibiotics through the IV but not coming home with any.

(In Mx) I was given a bag that had an antibiotic spray for the insicions. The bag had two other meds.
I looked them up online and one was antibiotics and one was a laxative.
I was also visited in my room by a medical salesperson, so I bought a package of meds from him.
He spoke english so I relabeled my meds in English. I haven't used these.

The antibiotics are large pills and I took one daily for nearly two weeks (skipped two).
I had no issues taking it with a sip of liquid.

I think that doctors and patients are different, I was also sent home with nothing and I did not need anything, my doctor even skyped me and was asking what I thought I needed and I wasn't in pain so I have never had any meds and my surgery was done 12/16/13. You probably didn't need anything.

No antibiotics here, either. Just the pain medication which I did not need after the first day. I was just told to keep taking my usual round of vitamins and supplements as well as my Omeprazole for acid reflux (I have Barrett's). Most are chewable, dissolvable or liquid, but the Omeprazole has to be crushed and mixed with apple juice.

I was not given any antibiotics to go home with. Just liquid pain med (yes I used it!). I also had my gall bladder removed at the same time. At my pre-surgery visit with my surgeon I was prescribed Omeprazole due to exising heartburn/reflux problems. I didnt finish the bottle of pain med...but I continue to take the Omeprazole. I am in total hell if I dont take them!

I was sent home with liquid Tylenol and some dissolvable Zofran for nausea. That's it.

I didn't take pain meds after surgery except for Tylenol.
I was told I wouldn't be given any antibiotics unless I developed an infection.

I'm actually glad more doctors aren't just giving them willy nilly. You don't need antibiotics unless you get an infection, and you shouldn't take them unless you actually need to.

Antibiotics are usually only given as a precaution during the procedure. .The surgeon won't send you home with antibiotics in most cases because there isn't any reason too over use antibiotics unless completely necessary! Also laprascopic procedures are less likely to become infected and generally heal very well on their own..hope this helps
