    Default Anti-depressants and the sleeve

Hi, I would like to hear from those of you who have been sleeved and is currently on Lexapro..I need to know if you are having problems with your weightloss while taking the Lexapro..I was terrified to take it pre sleeve because of the weight gain that its known to cause..Just wondering if its even an issue with the sleeve?

    Hi there
I have been on anti depressants and anti anxiety meds for about 18 months. M ine do not cause weight gain like yours and Seroquel. Just ask your psychiatrist to prescribe a anti depressant that doesn't give you weight gain. Sometimes you need to play around with your meds to find the one that suits you best.
I am getting sleeved next Wednesday 8 August and anxious, excited, nervous and hopeful that it will work.
    Good luck!
    Amanda

I started taking Lexapro about 6 years ago. I gained 30 pounds in 3 months after starting it. The weight gain could not be completely explained by an increase in calories or a lack of movement on my part. I am still on it because NOTHING works as well. It was a wonderful help for the peri menopausal crazies.
    Ask your doctor.

I was on Lexapro for a number of years. So here was my observation...

I never had the need to take any kind if anti depressant prior to becoming pregnant. Due to circumstances other than being pregnant it was a very hard time for me. I was new in the country, newly married, fell pregnant immediately, no family, no money blah blah blah. So I ate. I ate the biggest load if crap, donuts being my food if choice during pregnancy. Over the following 6 years, my circumstances changed but my eating habits didn't. Sugar, carbs, fats and some more sugar to coat it all! I went through some horrible bouts of depression, changed meds various times and eventually found a happy medium with Lexapro.

After about 50#s of weightloss after surgery I spoke to my doctor as I felt that the Lexapro was just making me feel totally numb. I personally believe that all the carbs and sugars that I was eating prior to surgery was playing havoc on my body, my hormones and obviously my health in general. She cut my dosage in half for a few months, then quartered and slowly weened completely off it. I have not felt better in years!

To answer your question, no I don't believe that Lexapro will inhibit your weightloss but depending on the reasons for being on anti depressants (everyone is different) you may find that you don't even need it anymore. I'm no doctor, no medical training here at all, but from my own experience I believe that (and not in every case) depression is directly linked to what we put in our bodies.

I had been on Lexapro for years until it just stopped working. My body just got too used to it. I had weight gain but also two pregnancies and infertility issues in between. About four years ago, I switched to Wellbutrin. Had to do some adjusting to dose, but it actually allowed me to lose some weight. I'm still on that with a chaser of Prozac. I'm almost to 30 lbs lost. I know I haven't lost more due to lack of exercise. Don't be afraid to switch up your meds. And if you aren't seeing a psychiatrist for your med management (instead of a GP), I would recommend it. My mental health has improved greatly since I made the switch.
