    Default 6 days post-op

Anyone else having diahrrea? I thought I would be constipated, but having the opposite problem My pain is getting better, now feels like a chronic stitch in my left side -- but having trouble getting enough protein down. I hate all the protein drinks I've tried except for Atkins. I like Carnation Instant sugar-free breakfast, but wondering if the milk is causing my diahrrea? How do you know if you're lactose intolerant?

I did not have that problem. However, I did have the issue where I could not find a protein drink that I liked however, I did find ISOPURE (at GNC) it is 20 OZ, 160 cals, no carbs/fat, and 40 grams of protein, it is more like a juice, but not sweet. It is really good. I also found at Bariatrichoice.com they have proti drinks that are really good, but they only have 15 grms of protein.

were you lactose intolerant before surgery?

Nope, I've never been lactose intolerant before. Thanks for the protein drink tips!

I had the same issue post -op. About day 10 and eleven it got better. Protein helps. I drink EAS, Myoplex Carb Control, 25 grams of protein and 3 grams of carbs. It's good and comes in chocolate fudge, strawberry and vanilla. Good Luck!

I tried the Bariatric Fusion brand of protein drinks. They are delicious. I have tried tons of them and they are all disgusting. The one I had today was mint chocolate ice cream. It tasted great! the website is bariatricfusion.com

If you're still having diarrhea, why not stop taking the Carnation Instant Breakfast for awhile and try something lactose-free. That should solve the problem.

I had started with diarrhea like 3 days post surgery and then until a week after that. Once I started on pureed food, it went away and the constipation kicked in. You are not eating nothing solid, so nothing solid will be coming out. At least that's the way I saw it! I wasn't really drinking lactose protein drinks, so I can't say it was the protein drinks. I was doing more isopure.

My surgery was the 18th. I'm not really having the same problem but I did find a protein I like. Its a tub of whey protein power. I add it to milk. U may want to ask if u are able to use almond or soy milk instead? Best of luck to u!

I think it is pretty common at first. I had it the first few days home when I had something with too much dairy, though milk in protein shakes wasn't bothering me. Still, to be safe, I have switched to Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla almond milk. 40 cals vs. 90 for skim milk, and it has 50% more calcium.

I started with diarhea on day 3 post op. It was really bad.....by day 6 I could litteraly come out of the bathroom and it would already hit me again. I remembered that after antibiotics the natural bacteria "floor" of your stomach can be killed off. Usually I can eat yogurt to replace the bacteria, but I am not on that stage yet. So I remembered some capsules that I had for my daughter when she was on an antibiotic, called Culturelle. They have the same effect as yogurt. they are a probiotic that promotes digestive health. I took one of the capsules and it fixed me!!!!!! So I've taken 1 each day and it's been a lifesaver.
